Catching Finger Mullet

I catch more fish from my kayak than I do in my jon boat. Lately though, I can’t seem to locate finger mullet. Any sugestions as to how to locate FM. What do I look for ?

I usually do well in the sharp bends in creeks, around oyster banks, openings of creeks and where small streams run into the creeks.

It gets me around…

Since they’re pretty close to the bottom of the food chain, They’re typically the last to leave the marshes. Look for them closest to low tide. They’ll stick around til there’s almost no water left, sometimes ending up landlocked until the rising tide. So you can also look for them in small ponds that are left when the tides gone out.
One thing I look for when I’m traveling the roads is the signs designating a culvert. Alot of times it’s saly water here in the lowcountry. If there’s water there at low tide chances are good they’ll be mudminnows or finger mullet.

How do you catch them from your yak? I’ve seen them, but haven’t thought of a way to get them. I’ve often thought it would be neat to have a 2’ cast net.

I have seen a 3ft cast net and I think I am gonna get one and practice in the pond behind my house

“We don’t have a plan and we’re stickin to it!”

I use a 3ft net and have had no problems once I did a few pratice cast in the water to get my proper balance needed to do it in my yak. You can pratically paddle within a few feet of a school without them even knowing your there. Anything bigger than 3 foot is just a hassle if you ask me. A foot more net and a right smart more lead just weights you down. When your a big boy like me that 350 weight limit sort of slips up on you once i get all my gear in the boat. and besides, I need to leave room on the boat for some big fishies to come back to the house and let me introduce them to my frying pan!
