I wish someone would start keeping some sharks. I can’t count how many sheepshead they have stolen from us this year. Then on Monday we lost 4 flounder to the sharks. They definitely seem to be getting worse every year here lately.
I heard you only want to eat makos and bonnetheads. Any truth to that?
If you catch a mako from the surf, you’ll have something to post about and I’ll be the first to subscribe to that. Mako is excellent table fare.
People eat all sorts of other sharks frequently. Its certainly not the best critter you can eat, but if you’re set on it, gut that thing immediately when you catch him. While he’s still alive, get all the innards out. The meat will taste much much better.
If you don’t gut it as soon as you catch it and you still want to eat it, everyone loves fried shark nuggets.

What he said. after gutting I rake the knife along the inside of the back bone and then dip the whole thing in the water and put immediately on ice. Unless on a dock, then it gets filleted while still wiggling. Got to be careful, even the little ones are strong. If a shark dies before you bleed it, the meat (IMO) is ruined. Tastes just like the critter smells.

I don’t know much about catching sharks but I think the Makos are usually caught offshore, is that right? I don’t have any plans to keep any of the sharks. As you guys noted that’s a lot of work. I would need to be with someone who has done all of that before. I generally don’t keep many fish, I like to let them go unless it’s a decent sized trout (under 20). Thank you guys for the information.
Yes sir, only offshore. And I’d guess only 1% of offshore guys have ever caught one. very rare to catch one and mostly caught while high speed trolling. I’ve eaten some and it is almost identical to swordfish (imo). Just never bring one into a boat alive or they will wreck havoc on any and everything near them. Had a friend almost bleed out from a bite to his calf.
Years ago, trolling in about 300’, we had a mako sky on a bait four or five times before finally biting through one of the leaders. It was probably one of my top two cool things to see offshore ever.
