catching sharks

I have never been one to target sharks while fishing, but occasionally hook up on one accidently while fishing for reds, therefore when I have friends that come in to town and want to “catch a shark” im lost on where to go and what to use as bait. Any tips would be nice as to what you use as bait, how you rig, and a general idea of where to fish for them. do you use live bait, cut bait? Ive heard the folly river is full of them and then a place right off castle pinkney is goo for catching sharks, but ive never consistently caught enough of them to say I can confidently put anybody on one.

Thanks!

If you are ok with the folly river, run it out to the stono inlet. Run out to the last can on the left. Get in the channel and float along watching your fish finder. You will see them moving in 32-35ft, a few feet off the bottom. Anchor up, use a good 8-10oz weight, sometimes 12+ depending on the tide.(water is fast through there, 4 or 6 wont get a mullet to the bottom)

I use a 8-10in heavily salted frozen mullet. When you are on them, the bait wont be down long. There are some real monsters in there, I had one almost spool 300yds off a 30 int. with the drag locked down. Most are 4-6’ range though.

Are they there this time of year or when the water is a little warmer.

They are in there year round. I usually fished for them in the “off season” because I don’t eat them but they are fun to catch. I use steel hooks so if I need to I can cut them loose and the hook will rust out in a few days. I made long steel leaders so I wouldn’t lose my big weights that are 3-4$ each. Get the big ones beside the boat and cut it loose close to the hook.
