Took my fiance out on the Ashley yesterday, we usually take the Tuesday off from holiday weekends, because IMO those days are the longest work days of the year. Anyway, she wanted to go catch catfish up the river because we had been catching a lot of rays lately anywhere else. We were wrapping up the day when I got a decent pop on a MM on the bottom, hoped it may be a little red cruising through. Pulled up about and 8-inch catfish instead. As I was working the hook out with pliers, the little SOB fell from chest-high and landed sideways on my foot. Pectoral fin went in one end and out the other. Then it was either snap the fin off or pull it out, felt like I had to give it 20 pounds of tug just to rip the little terd out of me. Anyways…the fish won yesterday, hope others had better luck than I did. Picture is below:
PS. Big thanks to Tracey at RiversEdge marina for wheeling my butt up to the car. Been through many broken bones, appendicitis, pacreatitis, the works. This was by far the worst pain I’ve ever felt, though my whole leg might fall off. Tracey you’ve got a tip coming your way next time I’m up there.
PPS. This is embarrassing, but can someone elaborate on the location/general areas of the “jetties?” Sounds like the variety out there is awesome.
the only time I got barbed happened at a summer camp helping kids in a stocked pond. they were fishing with cane poles and every second one would be waving one around off a 10 foot pole. ended up having one finning my right hand then just a few minutes later another one got my left. That ended my day!!!
Oh yeah, I’ve been “barbed” in the hand hundreds of times, used to catch some nasty channel cats up in VA. Never have I had the entire barb go in one way and out the other. Luck doesn’t get much worse than that, don’t go dropping catfish on your feet unless you need a Vicodin prescription…
Happened to be more than I would have liked as a kid growing up running catfish lines. If you take their tail and rub it on the barbed area it will take the pain away.
A wise man once said “Do as I say not as I do” Good advice when I tell you that.
