Catfish help on Murray

Trying to find some catfish. Can anyone give me some advise on boating some cats? Location, bait, depth, usuall stuff. Thanks.

with the falling water temps the catfish will be following the schools of bait, which are usually moving into the deeper channels. fish with whole or cut bait beneath the schools of bait ( find them with your depth finder ) you’ll also catch stripers doing this. any point that drops into the channel is a primary fish holding/feeding area.

you can catch your bait free from the schools using a sabiki or a gold hook rig.

excellent to the point advice from BH…live bait fished below these winter schools will work too (the bigger the better), but then you’ll catch those *%#+ stripers too.

when i said whole, i meant live also. another great tip–take 2 live baits and hold them side by side so they’re facing the same way and put both on 1 hook thru the front of the eye sockets. many times this will draw numerous strikes while only fishing a single bait gets few bites.

Do you fish near the bottom or where the bait schools are? I heard people fishing on the bottom for cats. Anchored up or drifting? I havent fished for cats ever. I’m just trying something new. I want to catch something big. I dont want to waste time and money on live bait and catch a boat load of short stripers like 19-20". Cant even have a little fish fry.

ususally the cats hold closer to the bottom. drop a bait down and reel up 2 turns. suspend the next bait halfway between the bottom and the school of bait. put the next just a few feet under the bait. usually the fish will show a preference for one of the depths over the other on that day.
most times the bait a couple turns up will be the hot ticket.
