I fish lake marion a good bit for catfish. Anything will work just about. Cut herring, shad, shiners, bream, etc… live bait, and if you get stink bait get SONNYS if you can find it. It is the best out there by far.

“Good things come to those who bait”

Growing up in Alabama, we always used sour chicken livers.

Unless something has changed the Edisto river is the only place in S.C., other than a private pond, that you can use live bream as bait. But live Bream is probably the best bait for larger cat fish of all species. Another cheap and tough bait is cow heart, I get mine from Reid’s, usually have to ask the butcher for it.

According to the Rules and Regs, you can use any baitfish for bait as long as it conforms to the legal size limits (no size limits on bluegill) and as long as you follow creel numbers on them (no more than 30 bream types removed on any given day).

You can’t use game fish as bait on trotlines, jugs, or similar methods, but rod and reel is OK.

2012 2013 SCDNR Rules and Regulations; No game fish (except bream cut into two or more equal parts), live bait or any bait other than bait listed below shall be used with trotlines,
set hooks and jugs: soap, doughballs, nongame fish or bream
(cut into two or more equal parts), shrimp, grapes or meat scraps. (page 22)

Looks like you can use Bream as bait on trot lines.

…Politicians aren’t the “Oldest Profession”, but the results are still the same!!!

bream is good, of course chicken livers inside of panty hose, and shrimp with garlic powder that has been in sun for a few hours…

white perch. . . cut the tail off and poke a few holes in it. . . Then strap the pole down or losen the drag and wait. . .

Fished lake marion all my life. White perch is good both live and as cut bait. If you are targeting flat heads live bream are or white perch are the best baits. I throw a net and catch threadfin or gizzard shad to use as cut bait, that is what they are feeding on. You can buy shad at some of the landings or in santee.

Take a cast net on the lake with you. Look out by the channel markers and hit the bait schools. Herring and shad all over the place.

G. perry pickering

I also like to jig gold hooks (tiny gold hooks for trout)to catch herring while I’m sitting still for catfish.

I use as thick of a mono as I can fit through the hook eyes (up to about 10lb line) and I tie on a half dozen, along with a 1/4" bell sinker on the bottom. Jig it up and down at random depths if you can’t see anything on the fish finder.

You may, or may not, find herring, but I’ve brought up 6 at a time before.

raw chicken breast marinated in garlic powder

best there is for cats

its a little late but if u go out agin chicken livers wraped in panti hose
