Was visiting friends in California and went to a small 27 acre lake. I was targeting small panfish but ended up hooking a small catfish. Has this ever happened to anyone before?
Yeah I caught one on a rooster tail once. Crankbaits often produce flatheads in places they are numerous.

Hoof, I’ve seen flatheads busting something on the surface in the diversion canal. Had to be flatheads-- they were huge, turd brown, and they did the signature tail-flop as they busted. Didn’t seem to be in packs like striper do, but they definitely were active.

I’ve caught some good cats at my parents pond in Harleyville screaming a top water bait close to shore, Pitviper nailed it, they are eating anything now.

Catfish are opportunistic and voracious predators. If it swims by they’ll typically eat it
