Finally caught one of these saltwater carp after hearing so much about them. Anchor up at the Gribbage, chunk-o-mullet on the bottom, rod in holder, when it bends, over reel him in.
When I got him to the surface he looked pretty bloated. Now being a bass fisherman I know about “fizzing”, but it didn’t seem right to stick a hole in his stomach. I tried to revive him, but he wasn’t going down. I don’t want to get yelled at (rightfully so) for letting him float off. Also the reason there are no pics of me with the fish (easily a 55-inch fish). I sent him back down with this little deal “the dude” told me about. Made it myself, hook fish in upper lip, send down, then yank on rod to free fish. Thing worked! Can’t really tell if the fish will survive, but just seems like a better option than a hole in the stomach.
Can’t seem to post a pic of this thing, but it’s a straight shank, 12/0 hook, no barb, weight clipped to the eye, and line tied to the shank.
Poking a hole in its stomach is definitely not the “better option” since it’s not a bloated stomach that keeps them from being able to dive. Now the swim bladder…that’s a much better option than the stomach.
salt water carp! that’s funny! almost as good as people paying to catch a bonnet Head.
And on the 55" thing, I’d need a pic to believe you.
So now you have been there and done it… You gonna just leave the rest of the big breeders alone to breed more for all of us that love to catch a few slot fish to eat?
I’ve never specifically targeted carp but I have caught my share of them and they pull like a freight train. I’ve personally never eaten one but as far as a fight, I can see why people chase’em. Carp fishing in the UK and western Europe is like bass fishing here in the states.
