Chances of success in the FMNF

Not trying to ask for areas, or “cyber scout” but me and a buddy want to shoot some ducks. What do yall think out chances of success are? Are there good numbers of birds there? I know of woodies and previous site searches have said canvasbacks and mallards as well? What calls and if needed decoys should I have for hunts there? I sincerely hope I don’t sound too rubberhead-ish. I just don’t want to hunt somewhere whee there isn’t any ducks. May also check dungannon plantation over CHRISTmas break, that’s only open Wednesday’s right? Also I have looked on the SCDNR site with limited success, me being 15, what do I need to he completely legal in hunting ther and anywhere in SC? Thank yall

Duck hunters are hard core, good luck! I always put in at the poleyard on the santee. Find a nice little area along the shoreline down the river and set up before it gets light out. Youll kill some ducks out there. I believe all you need is a federal duck stamp, state migratory bird permit and a hunting license. Make sure your gun is plugged meaning it will not hold more than three shells total and youre using steel shot. I think thats all. If ive forgotten anything im sure the other members will let us know. Goodluck.

I dont know what exactly is required for a junior but I know you have to have a WMA permit if your going to hunt public land.

15 and under don’t need a license, 16-17 you can get a junior sportsman license for 16$.

for starters you will need an adult with you in the FMNF.

…a licensed adult (18+) in the FMNF.

I suggest hunting creek pools in the FMNF and your chances of success are great with woodies, squirrell and woodcock. It’ll take you a few times to find a productive pool but once you do they tend to favor that pool for whatever reason and even new birds will come to it. Don’t spend a lot of time at one pool. I tend to give them the first hour after sun rise. If they’re not there then walk down the creek bank if you’re quiet enough, slow enough, look down the creek in upcoming pools and use the terrain to your advantage you’ll get plenty of jump shots. Then mark that pool as your go to pool next time. If the ducks aren’t cooperating there are plenty of ops to shoot squirrel and find good hog areas too. Your success will increase as you spend more time out there.
