changing lower unit seals?

had water in my lower unit and need to change some seals. this will be my first time. any suggestions? Is it a hard job? Thanks.

Special tools are usually required to pull the bearing housing. I would not attempt it even if I had the tools. It can be precision work and IMO best left to a shop that will stand behind their work.

What seals?

Prop shaft
Upper drive shaft
Water pump

It depends on what you are taking on.

Just my opinion but if it is the lower seals TAKE IT TO A MECHANIC, those can be very tricky and not a hard job for someone that has the right tools(there is a special tool from what I found out) and has done it before.

I had lower unit seals go out in my old 225 suzie 2 stroke and had one of my buddies that is VERY mechanical but even he with the manual in hand backed off.

Took the lower unit to boat mechanic and $200 and next day I had it ready to go, he also replaced upper seals and water pump while he was at it ( i had all the parts)

I retracted my earlier post due to the fact, I don’t want to mislead Private Island into causing more expensive problems by stating, replacing seals is really not a big deal. I’ve replaced seals on several models, and manufacturers, without any problems. I’ve also put my foot in my mouth, by not being familiar with some of the newer equipment on the market today!! If you feel so inclined Private Island, have a look. If it appears to be outside the scope of your mechanical abilities, by all means take it to a qualified marine mechanic, but you never learn without trying. Seeya, Scott

no to terribly difficult, if you do try it, just make sure to have the gearcse pressure tested before using it, to make sure you did it right
