I picked up a zebco med/heavy 7’ “Boss Hawg” combo from walmart awhile back when I was exclusively fishing in freshwater. I just started saltwater fishing this summer (got a nice Penn Fierce combo after getting advice from this forum, it works great for me) and I want to be able to have 2 rods on the pier at once, and I know the zebco 808 reel the zebco rod came with won’t fare well in saltwater. Would it be advisable for me to get a new open saltwater reel and put it on the zebco rod? I’m sure it’s not ideal, but I’m trying to save money where I can, looking at basic functionality and durability. Thanks for any advice.
You should just purchase another Penn Fierce combo, I personally think it a better deal because you get the rod and the reel. Also I always rinse my rods, reels, and tackle after every fishing trip in saltwater. Should help them last a long time.

Try a rhino rod,can get them a wally world for around 20.00.I have one that has seen it’s share of big reds, trout sharks sheepshead and everythig in between for over 20 years and I have not had an ounce of trouble out of it.My kids have slammed it in the door, stepped on it and it still fishing like it was new.
The penn fierce is a good choice also.
