Changed the oil in my F115 for the first time yesterday. Super easy, as follows:
-
Tilt motor all the way up.
-
Remove oil plug with 14mm Socket. Drain plug is up inside the drain tube, which is on the back of the motor, about 2 feet up from the bottom. Yes, with the motor tilted up, not a drop of oil will come out. NOTE: There is a metal gasket on the plug. Yamaha says to replace each time you change oil. Part is about $3. Lots of folks reuse a few times, which I did. Don’t see the gasket? Probably stuck to the motor. Look up inside the drain tube.
-
I used a tube with a funnel for the next step, which is to GRADUALLY lower the motor and drain the oil into a container. The drain tube on the outboard makes it easy to catch the oil in a funnel. I have heard someone sells a tube with a threaded end that screws into the drain plug hole, but a funnel with a long tube worked well for me, but it did drain a little slowly. Did I mention to gradually lower the motor? If not, you may overflow your funnel. [:I]

After all the oil drains out, replace your oil plug. Yamaha manual says torque to 20 foot pounds. If you don’t have a torque wrench, tighten about 1/4 to 1/2 turn past snug.
-
Remove engine cover and locate oil filter (one starboard side). Stuff some paper towels tightly below the filter, then unscrew and remove. On my motor, I actually had NO oil drip from the filter, since the boat had sat all night. The towels will catch any oil.
-
Partially fill new filter, and wipe some oil around the o-ring. As long as you don’t put too much oil in the filter, none will drip out when you screw the new one on. Tighten hand tight, then turn recommended amount/torque, which is printed on oil filter box.
-
Add 4.25 - 4.65 quarts of oil, check your oil level until it is in the mid-point of full, and you’re done! Took longer to write this up than to replace the oil.
I ran the boat for a minute then checked for leaks. After a day on the water checked again for leaks and oil level. Ever
