Charging batteries

Hello everyone. I have a general question regarding charging marine batteries. My setup is, 36V trolling motor batteries with built in 3 bank charger, 1 house battery, and 1 engine battery.

Hooking up the trolling motor batteries is simple, plug them with my extension cord. I rarely need to charge either of the house or engine batteries, 2-3 times per year, with a Battery Tender 12V charger on alligator clips. Also, I am pretty sure the extension cord is 100’ 14ga/3.

This past week I had the trolling motor batteries charging, maybe starting on Thursday, then decided to charge the engine battery also. So Friday, I just put a splitter on the end of the extension cord, so I could run both the 3 bank charger and the Battery Tender.

During our time on the water, I no issues with the engine battery, but when I deployed my trolling motor, the remote indicated the trolling motor batteries were low (guessing around 15-20%).

I did set it up to charge the trolling motor batteries last night (only), and this morning they are showing fully charged.

Is this just a weird phenomenon? Did I do something wrong? Is the extension cord to small?

I’ll ask Ralph when he comes back to the shop. Stand by.

maybe an issue with the splitter not functioning
when all pluged in did you happen to look to see if the charge lights were on?
the extension cord you are using should be enough to handle a normal 3 bank charger, depending on how many amps the charger is is.

I “think” I remember hearing the 3 bank charging running and seeing the Battery Tender lit up, I am normally really conscience of this when I set up for charging.

one of things that I thought was really odd, was I expected the trolling motor batteries to already be fully charged. because they were already charging for more than a day. I almost wonder did they “discharge”?

anyway, I checked the trolling motor batteries this morning and they are showing fully charged. I setup the battery tender on the engine battery again a few minutes ago and kept the trolling motor batteries plugged up. This is the exact situation on Friday. I did absolutely verify the 3 bank charger and the battery tender are running. I will check in the morning.

With the 3 bank charging (under load) and the splitter attached, check the voltage where the splitter is. Probably getting low voltage…

I never use anything less that 12 ga on a 100 ft cord! a lot of drop in 100’

Definitely, also, if the outlet you are plugging into is already quite a distance from the source, panel, it will add to the problem.

Wouldn’t hurt to check specs on charger.
