Charging battery

A friend of mine told me to remove the two caps (where you fill with water) on top of the battery whenever I am charging. I have never heard done this\at? Anyone got any recommendations??? My batteries are under the console and it would be a pain to do that everytime. But I will do it if I need to. Thanks!

Battery needs to vent while being charged, the caps have a small vent hole in them to accomplish this. Taking caps off is way old school, I remember my dad doing that on batteries, not 100% sure but maybe back then they didn’t have the vent holes.

You do not have to do that…if water/acid is coming out the vents you are charging too fast…reduce amps…or you have a dead cell

If that water/acid gets on your clothes it will eat a hole in them. It will do a number on whatever surface it gets on also

He does seem pretty old school! Nothing wrong with that but I am glad I asked. The battery is fine, he just recommended it the other day when he stopped by. He was talking about the lids blowing off and battery acid all over the inside of my console, etc. I am glad that is one less thing I have to worry about. Thanks again for taking the time to answer my question. It is always very appreciated.

yes…It is acid

In the old days that is what you did. Like someone above said they are vented now but if you put it on a fast commercial charger and were boiling them, then it would spit acid. Slow and low charge is better and you will be fine.

I use a 5 amp minn kota charger so hopefully that is fine. Thanks again for the responses.
