Charging trolling motor battery

Do I have to disconnect the trolling motor from the battery when charging??? Right now I have a portable charger and I have been disconnecting the two but it seems like a lot of extra work. I am getting an onboard charger soon (thanks for the advice from other posters) I decided onboard was a better solution for me. Thanks again for your help and sorry for my ignorance!

No you don’t have to disconnect the trolling motor from the battery while charging the battery.

Some where years ago I was told to unplug tm when charging but have been told it does not matter. Still do it out of habit I guess

according to Motorguide’s owner’s manual you should disconnect TM before connecting charger.

Thanks for the help. I actually talked to Minn Kota today and the guy told me that I should disconnect the TM anyway as it is drawing from the battery even when it is not in use. As always I appreciate your help.

I just trip my 50 A breaker. More for safety so no one looses a finger if the handle gets turned and the motor comes on.
