Charleston 60

My youngest son, 13, is in town and has been wanting to go offshore a bit. So i figured the Charleston 60 was a good bet for some nice BSB. Pulled out of Shem Creek about 6:40 and right off the bat had a real nice fella offer up his un-needed Manhaden. Then proceeded out to Morris and finished loading up in 2 casts. 4-6" about 50 per cast. Headed out to the 60 in what was supposed to be 2’ seas, but more closely resembled 4’. Got to the 60 and there was another boat out there already. Always nice to have company. We drifted over the live bottom areas and managed to catch every shark in the stinkin’ ocean. Had several large sharks that were cut off at the boat and several that were boated to admire up close and personal. Landed and boated a nice Gag that was released to grow a little more. We pushed 6 more miles SE, out to 70’ and fished a bit but no takers. I forgot the camera so no pics. My youngest son had never caught or seen sharks (up close and personal) and these were big enough to give him a workout. A great day on the water.

You didn’t have any luck out further where I told you about, were you drifting or anchored? The current has been really strong lately and you need to get right over the live bottom you mark and get anchored right on top of it.

We drifted. You are right about the current. I was using 3oz and the lines were still almost horizontal. I’ll get this bottom stuff down eventually. Maybe even before they close it off. I did like the look of the bottom on the depth finder. Lots of structure. We were alone out there with no buddy boat, so I wasn’t real comfortable. We stayed out there about an hour and the kids were tired so we headed in about 12:30. I wanted to beat the afternoon winds too. But I do appreciate the suggestion. We did have a great time anyway.

Nice day with the children! Those are memories they will never forget!

Try using 6 - 8 oz when fishing 60’ - 70’ and you will fare better. Just keep letting line out to stay on bottom.

PM me sometime and I’ll buddy boat with you. I am going to take another trip (weather permitting) before the tropical threat starts up in August. Probably hit the Y73 and red banks.

texasred when there is another calm day on the weekend pm me and you can follow me out, I have a spot not too far from where I told you with plenty of grouper and triggers. I rarely ever see anyone in the spot I told you and never in the other. The grouper spot is better in November December, but doesn’t look like we will be fishing it then this year the way things have gone.
