I’m New to this site, have been fishing all my life and am wondering about getting out to the 60. I have a 2006 18’ McKee. I have been all over inshore but never out that far. I am wanting to catch some bsb before the season goes out again. Is it reasonable on a calm day to get out there. I have GPS and several good maps and a vhf radio. Also what kind of bait should I use. I’m from around Orangeburg, so not too much help locally. Thanks for any help!

Pick your days and you will be just fine. 2 footers at 7-8 seconds come around a good bit, just not on weekends it seems. There are closer reefs that hold bsb. The Charleston near shore might be better if its rougher. My friend has a 19’ SeaPro bay and runs it out to the 60 in 3-4’s, but he is nutty.
I would run my 16’ McKee skiff to LCA and 4ki when the ocean was playing nice.
If you are just going for bsb, use a circle hook. I like a 2 or 1 circle single bottom rig. I use smaller hooks so I don’t have tons of gear and I like to go spade fishing. Squid is great for bsb, its tough and will usually last for 5-7 fish. You will catch 10 for 1 keeper.
Are you familiar on how to find the bottom structure with your fish finder and do you have a reef anchor?

Yeah, getting those days to match up with my days off is the tricky part. I’ve been in the edisto coming back in 3-4 and was never scared, but I wasn’t trying to anchor up and fish either.
I do know how to find bottom structure, but I don’t know about the reef anchor. I have a good anchor for heavy current, but not sure about a reef anchor. What’s the difference?

If you have a good anchor you like, don’t take it to the reef. Reef anchors have “fingers” that can be pulled on to straighten out to dislodge it. There is a lot of stuff to get hung up on. When I had my skiff I found a heavy mushroom would hold it and not get stuck. With my 22’ boat, I needed a heavy reef anchor to hold. When it gets hung up and the usual tricks don’t work to remove it, I get the rope as short as possible, tie it to both front cleats and back up. The prong will straighten up and come loose.

Thanks Matt, after researching a little, DNR has directions how to build one cheap out of rebar and pipe. I’ll probably try to find one at a reasonable price, but if not I’ve got the scrap laying around my house to make a couple. Also, any luck finding jellyballs lately? I haven’t seen many around this year since April. Hoping to try spadefishing as well.
Negative on the jellies. Early spring there was thousands of them in the stono inlet. That was the last I saw them. Next time I see a mess of them I want to see if I can freeze one. I would imagine it turns to mush. I have a big chest freezer I keep stinky bait in.
Stop by haddrells and get a bag of clams. I think it was 4-5$ for a decent size bag. I have had no luck with shrimp trying to catch spades. Might be my bad luck though.

or those out there that are willing to share their experience with me. If I can I will share mine also.
