Charleston Marine

I took a boat that I’m building up to Charleston Marine last week for an engine install and picked it up today. I’ve never dealt with them before, but wanted to say that Mark and his crew did a beautiful job on my boat and he was a pleasure to deal with. I’ll do business with them again  Thanks Mark!

Sorry, I thought about it and wanted to, but needed to make a quick turn around trip. I’ve got to have this boat ready for state inspection on Saturday and ready for a test ride with my client Sat. afternoon. Still have to rig the hydraulic steering and take care of some other details before then. I might go out to the shop tonight and do some more work to get her ready.

Thanks! It’s a Cracker Built Custom Boat, of course [

Jacques Mertens hull design, 18’ Garvey, highly customized. A complete build thread is here http://forums.bateau2.com/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=45383

Beware, it is 200 pages long and has over 1,000 pictures, and a lot of BS mixed up in between

Photobucket album of the build is here from start to today, without all the BS, just pictures http://s1244.photobucket.com/user/CrackerLarry/library/GF18%20Build?sort=3&page=45

I still have a lot of trim work to do. I’m installing a natural finished planked and caulked cypress sole (deck) like this test panel…

and a lot of bright finished wood trim, both cypress and ipe. The cypress is 150 year old reclaimed heart wood and is beautiful. The ipe is also old reclaimed lumber. It’s beautiful too, but almost as hard as steel and difficult to work. They don’t call it

I have seen that boat in person and trust me, pictures do not do it justice. It is an absolute work of art. That is going to be one happy customer. It is beautiful Larry, especially with that new Yammy hanging off the back. Hate you won’t be able to make it to teh roast Saturday but that boat has been a long time coming.

Awesome!! I’ll sit down on a rainy day and go through it. Thanks

Thanks for posting the link to those pictures. It’s a great looking boat. You definitely have skills Cracker Larry !

I couldn’t own something like that. I’d want to keep it in a glass case with a sign that says “Don’t drool on the glass, please.”

She’s not just a pretty face, it’s built tough and meant to use hard. Not a boat you have to worry about damaging by running up on oysters and such. Or much of anything else, except for Charleston traffic [:0]. I was real glad to get her back in the country where she’s safe

CL,
Just finished looking at your build thread, absolutly beautiful boat. You are a true craftsman, it is amazing what some do with a jig saw, circular saw and a drill. Not to mention a few gallons of epoxy, cloth, and wood…

Are the graphite coating and the tinted epoxy the same thing? How would that hold up as a finish on the decks?

Eventually I would like to build my own, but that is still a couple years down the line, but bookmarking ideas when I see them.

Looks awesome Larry.

thanks for the kind words Larry.

No, the graphite is a black carbon powder that you mix with epoxy at about a 30% ratio. It’s tough as steel after you get a few coats built up. I usually use 5 coats.

The tinted epoxy is just a pigment additive, like paint tint. I use it inside of lockers, coolers, live wells and places that get a lot of abuse but out of the sunshine. It’s much tougher than any paint, but it doesn’t have any U/V resistance and will yellow and eventually break down in the sun, so it’s no good as a deck finish.

Graphite would make an excellent deck finish, but who wants black decks[:0]

10-4, thanks for the explanation, I think I remember now you talking about the UV degridation on the tinted epoxy.

Got to say, the custom hidden rod holders look great, you need to figure a way to market those.

Thanks, but I never want to build those again  I think it took me a month just to make those hollow frames and get the inserts fitted just right.

This fat girl will have plenty of rod holders. 6 under the gunwales, 12 on the gunwales and 6 more on the T-top. That should be enough:smiley:
