My wife and I are bringing our 18 year old down in mid-July for his freshman orientation at CoC. I’m looking at hotels and had a question. Which is the better bet, coming into downtown Charleston in the morning from Mt. Pleasant or from West Ashley (Savannah Hwy)? I looked at staying downtown but dang, didn’t want to take out a loan for a place to sleep.
Thanks

They’re both pretty terrible, but West Ashley has a more direct route (17 to Lockwood to Calhoun) and is closer in general. It really depends on what time you you’re on 17.

Terrible? Go visit Miami or ATL and you will see terrible traffic…
I commuted to CofC from West Ashley for 4 years. It wasn’t bad at all. Personally I’d aim for the garage off Wentworth for parking. They tore down the George Street one, right? I guess there’s also the one up at the Francis Marion.

Used to live in Atlanta, so I’d rather not. That’s the same view that people from the North use about our snow days. It’s all relative.
There is a Laquinta Inn right by Ripley Light Marina and California Dreaming. Usually around $100 a night, and only one bridge crossing from downtown. Plus you can wander around the marina and drool over boats while he’s in orientation.
The is a new renovated Holiday Inn Express at the end of Cross Town and Lockwood. A few blocks from the college and cheap taxi rides anywhere into town. Free breakfast and parking.
