Hey guys, thanks in advance for any advice
Planning on going to the charleston near shore for the first time. Any tips on bait, rigging, placement, anchoring etc etc would be helpful. I’m very proficient inshore with reds, trout, sharks, fish the jetties regularly, along with ICW creeks etc.
Live bait (menhaden/mullet), cut bait, Carolina rigs ok? Anything I need to focus on in particular for a successful trip? I’ve got a couple 5000:6000 Penn reels along with my lighter inshore tackle.
Carolina rigs are good, regular inshore live and cut bait. Don’t throw down your good anchor if you are over or real close to the structure, need a reef anchor or a cinder block will work in a pinch.
You can’t catch fish on a dry line
The most fun (and best fight) this time of year is if you see spadefish breaking the surface. Net a couple of jelly balls on the way out and cut strips of it to put on a small hook with fluorocarbon leader. I have never had luck with the technique of rigging some jelly balls on a weighted coat hanger to coax them to the surface but have read about it. Good on the grill

Just use chicken rigs with cut squid…you’ll have a hard time keeping the BSB off of your lines. They say if you fish the sands around the wrecks/reefs, you can catch flounder, but I’ve never done it. We have caught some monster reds out there. I think a guide has good luck getting sheepshead…might take a few fiddlers and give them a shot.
I left a good reef anchor out there with 8 foot of chain. If you happen to bring it up, I want it back.
