i am thinking about trying the charleston nearshore reef this weekend, i only have a 17.5 grady, is this doable? i have never had her offshore but want to try, any thoughts
Look at reef cast and NOAA for wind & Wave action. I babied myself off-shore for the 2 years. The Maximum beating i will take is 3 foot waves @ 6 seconds intervals and wind 15 knots. The next day, is on the couch. My boat is bigger
There are those size boats at the near-shore reef, if you don’t see other boats your size & your getting bounced around too much, it is a hint to come home and fish out there another day.
Please ! wear a life jacket. Have all the safety gear. I enjoy fishing out there too.
Good Luck:wink:
It looks like Sunday will be your better day. It should be real nice for your size boat. Waves at 9-10 sec, 7-10mph wind. I used to take my 16’ skiff as far as 4ki from the stono when it was 1 footers at 9+ sec. You have to be very alert to cues the ocean and wind are telling you. When you notice the wave interval tightening up, maybe a splash over the motorwell, anchor dragging from the waves picking up, etc. Time to pack it up.
I got wrapped up in some 4+ footers about 1 mile out one time. You will only do that 1 time in a small boat. The fish were slamming and I wanted to just stay on the reef a little bit longer. I will never do that again.

MattR, did you get your boat fixed?
Sorry MAX, don’t mean to highjack your thread, just saw MattR’s post and thought he may be lurking!
