Charleston Nearshore Reef 3/02

After going all the way back to North Charleston to get the GPS/bottom finder, we launched from Remley’s Point and ran out to the Charleston nearshore reef at 35 mph. It was a pretty smooth ride for a 19’ bay boat. Other than slack high tide, we had a very consistent bite from the sharpnose and black sea bass. We caught about a dozen sharpnose and two dozen bsb. All of the bsb were between 10-12".

Shrimp got robbed off of the hook almost every time. Squid produced the best results. I tried a trick worm on a jighead just for fun, but nothing wanted it. I also tried throwing a topwater plug when we saw minnows jumping. I was really hoping there was something big scaring them up to the top, but the only things that showed interest were the seagulls.

It was a beautiful day, and we had a lot of fun. We both had plans made by our wives for the afternoon, so we headed back to the landing around 11 AM. The harbor was rougher than the ocean!

I had a sharpnose on one side, and my buddy did a solo double up with a sharpnose and a bsb!

When my buddy caught this fish, I told him it was the biggest, fattest sharpnose I had ever seen. I don’t know why I didn’t check on my phone to see what the state record is. It measured between 13 and 14 lbs on the boga. It was close, but we threw it back.

The ride out was cold, but it warmed up really nicely really quickly.

Those are horn dogs. Spiny dogfish. The sharpnose sharks won’t move back in until the water is in the mid 60’s but looks like y’all fun!

Nice day. I agree with the other poster about some of those being Spiny Dogfish sharks. They can jab you in the arm and cause a decent amount of pain.

Charleston Fishing’s most hated guide!

Y’all are right!

The lack of an anal fin gives them away.
