Charleston Sharks

Hey Guys,

I’m new to fishing, so I hired a guide to take me fishing. Long Story short I bagged a shark that put up a good enough fight for me to be permanently hooked on shark fishing! I tried picking his brain on the how to of shark fishing, but he was vague and for good reason; Why teach when you can be paid right?
My question is I hear people talking about fishing the shoal on Castle Pinckney, I too have heard of the mammoth hole around Isle of Plams that holds the 100 lb monsters, and I even heard drag lines around the Morris Island light house or the jetties.
The preferred technique i’m told is to drift with the current and let the lines drag with everything from crab to live big bait(That I don’t know how to find)
Is there anybody that would be willing to give a newbie a few pointers, or even take me out and show me the ropes? I am very willing to learn, and I can buy gas, bait drinks, or whatever. I also own a boat so if I HAD to use mine i would be willing to do so.
I figure since i live in charleston I want to start taking advantage of the great fishing, Before trading out my beautiful Regal it maybe advisable to learn how.

You got the wrong guide. I’ve been out with Rob Bennett of Low Country Inshore and Mike Waller out of Kiawah. They both not only were instructive but both answered additional questions and offered advice when I ran into them later on. I don’t think Bennett is on this site but Capt. Waller is “Saltfisher”. If you’re willing to spend money on gas, etc., spend it on a guide.

It’s pretty common for people to hire guides to learn fishing techniques and spots. I have been at fishing seminars where some of the best guides tell you their tricks for free.

Anyway, the jetties, dynamite hole, Stono inlet around the cans, Folly around bird keys, Capt. Sams inlet at Kiawah all have big sharks. These are places I have caught them, I don’t know about any other place.

If you want them around, chum for them. There is as many ways to chum as there are stars in the sky. I like a basket with chopped up blues, mullet, whiting, macks, etc. Tiny pieces, you want to draw them in, not feed them.

I then use a huge chunk of sting ray, mack, blue, or whatever big baitfish you have.

I’ve always had pretty good luck using a balloon for a float with 8-12ft of 80lb+ mono leader and blue crab/mullet/stankassfish around the area where some good ole Citadel boys started a war.

Shrimp boats coming in will have sharks trailing when they clean their nets too, just don’t get too close.
