Charleston to Beaufort trip

Hey guys,

Looking to take the wife and another couple down to Beaufort for a weekend in july. I have read some articles and everyone says its pretty easy, but like abraham licoln once said “dont trust the internet”. I trust CF.

Any advice on the trip itself? Where to stay? We are taking a 23 CC so i was wondering if there are marinas on the way to stop and fill up? Im sure this doesnt belong in inshore discussion, not sure where else to put it. Thanks for any advice!

Stop and fill up  It’s only about 60 miles, you should be able to do that in 2 or 3 hours, there and back on the same tankful easy in a 23 CC. Nothing to it, get a good chart, keep the red on your right, green on the left heading south, it’s only a 2 beer ride

The Beaufort downtown municipal marina has treated me good for 30 years. There is a motel across the street, Holiday Inn I think, or Quality Inn maybe, but it’s tired. Several good places to eat within walking distance. We stay at the Beauleau House when passing through there. It’s a nice and unique bed and breakfast on Cat Island. Take a cab, or the owner may offer to come pick you up.

That is the Best Western Plus “Sea Island Inn” across from the marina, not a bad place to stay. The wife and i made the trip last summer and with a good chartplotter it’s a easy trip ICW all the way , try to do it at high tide if possible it’s less stress. If you have time make a side trip to Hilton Head , nice places to eat and shop for the wife.

The Rhett House Inn is really nice. Mrs HoofArded and I got married there. It’s within walking distance to the marina.

I have taken the boat (sea hunt triton 225) down to fripp the last few years with the kids - about 75 miles from my marina on the ashley to the fripp island marina - fun, easy trip

Look me up while you are here! I run a 1930 Elco. One sweet ride, Her slip is at the sea wall in front of the ship store.

you’ve got plenty of boat so it shouldn’t be a safety issue, but Saint Helena Sound can get big. good trip though.

Take the advise for running High tide if you can. if not follow crackers advise. Sand and mud flats seem to come out of no where when you get out of the channel. Some pretty scenery.

Check out Morgan Island if you enter morgan creek keep to the left entering and follow the red line till you see the dock. You may get lucky and see a couple of monkeys. Beaufort’s a beautiful place. Dockside Restaurant is boat friendly.

Good maps posted there Fred. I’ve boated from Edisto to Beaufort a couple times. Good trip. usually takes an hour.

I haven’t seen monkeys on Morgan Island in over 2 yrs.

Good beach that would be about half way is the back side of Otter Island. Leave the ICW between Otter Island (or ■■■■■■■ Island) and Hutchinson Island. There are always boats there (where the “O” is in the above map).

Edisto Marina is a little detour from the ICW, but has gas. You may also want to cruise by Bennett’s Point. Not much there but shrimp boats and a gas dock.

Thats a fun trip, The monkeys you see sometimes, its hit or miss but its a beautiful island regardless if ya see them. when you stop at Port Royal Landing Marina to get Fuel walk up the dock to the Back Porch Grill and get a Burger. They are one of the best in town. Yall should have a great time.

Saw none last year and only once in 2011, got some family that are only a short distance from them and only saw them once last year. One of the caretakers told me they had found a couple with embedded BB’s in them. So I would take it some jack leg has taught them to stay away from us.

We’ve been on the other side at the sand bar and set up a telescope and watched a troop playing in the trees.

edit: date’s wrong in the picture… looks kind of green for February!

Planning a another trip this summer , will be staying on Daufuskie this time at Sandy Point. Plan to make a side trip to Savannah can anyone give any advice on docking at the river walk area.

Both the Westin and the Hyatt have docking. Call ahead to make arrangements. Neither are very well protected but OK for short term. Use plenty of fenders and point the bow upriver. Keep in mind that the Savannah River is narrow with very strong current and you will be sharing it with container ships and tug boats. Also a lot of trees and trash wash down the river so pay attention.

A much better (safer) place to leave the boat is Thunderbolt, at Savannah Bend Marina or Bahia Bleu, then take a short cab ride downtown.

we took the trip a couple of years ago in our Grady 20’ WA. Here’s some pics of the trip. We docked at Port Royal Landing Marina, great place.
