Looking to upgrade electronics on a 23 Contender. I spent last winter and spring bring life back to the 1995 23 Contender Open. The electronics are out of date, I plan to install a new unit this winter. I am interested in a chart plotter and fish finder, and plan to spend between $2000-3000. I am undecided on radar or a unit compatible siriusXM or none of the above. School me on electronics.
There are a couple bad arse Simrad units in the swap shop
Trying to decide between the Simrad nss9 evo2 or the Garmin 1040xs. What are yalls thoughts on these units.
look at the garmin website for the new 7400 and 7600 series. come with built in dual band chirp, plus side and down scan for a great price.
i will be either getting a 7612 or another 8212 to replace my 5212. the 7612 seems to have a lot more features for a lot less $$$$$.

~$3500.00 for the 7612 or ~$5000.00 for the 8212 and another ~$1000.00 or so for a suitable transducer? I am not sure that I would call either a “great price”, but the 7612 does have some good features that I would like to have such as touch screen and a 12" screen. But for inshore and fresh water, some of the other features are not really necessary. Features such as dual band c.h.i.r.p. come into their own in the deep water and I typically fish in less that 100’. My 1040XS has the same charts, single band c.h.i.r.p., and DownVu/SideVu and with the new units coming out, I’ll bet that you will be able to get a good deal on one fairly soon. There’s a good thread (it’s long) on THT right now about the new units. http://www.thehulltruth.com/marine-electronics-forum/629736-new-garmin-units-web-site.html
Wade through some of the BS and there’s some good info there.

RIP my “Puppy Dog” 10/15/2004 - 1/14/2013. I’ll never forget him. What a special friend he was.
How tech savvy are you? Simrad is a better bottom unit but Garmin’s interface is super easy.
Simrad or Lowrance only machines on my boats!
I still use my old school 952 Northstar as primary gps but have a Garmin combo unit with Sirius weather witch I feel is a must for smaller boats. We are going to upgrade this winter and am looking hard at Simrad A few buddies who run charters out of Pirates Cove are using them and the newer units are very user friendly. You need to consider radar very hard if you are gonna run offshore in the dark its a must for saftey.

Consider getting touch-screen. I got it via 12" evo 2 Simrad and have been pleasantly surprised how much it helps with adjustments and changes.
