Charter Advise

So I realize it might be kind of weird to ask recommendations for a good charter seeing as many of the captains read these forums, but I figured I’d give it a shot.

Basically, I am an amateur fisherman trying to learn the ropes. I fished a lot over my Christmas break (I go to Clemson) and feel like I learned a good amount from my time on the water. I’ve read many times on these forums that hiring a GOOD guide with dramatically cut the learning curve, so thats exactly what I want to do! But how do I know who is a good guide? I live waterfront in the Old Village area of Mt. P, so I would preferably like to hire a guide that could teach me how to fish the areas I already do (Lower Wando (inside 41), Mt. P/Shem Creek area, ICW behind Sullivans and IOP)… IE, I would rather not be carried of to Sewee/Bulls Bay!

Really, I just wanna learn! If someone could point me in the right direction that would be very appreciated.

Fishwish,

It shouldn’t be too weird for them, as it’s business and nothing personal. I’ve fished with several guides who post on this site and have caught fish with all of 'em. That being said, I’d personally recommend Captain John Fuss of Holy City Fishing Charters (843) 417-3052 or Captain Mitch Barber with Lowtide Redfish Charters (843) 532-0318. Good luck with you search, and be sure to post pics!

I would give Knot Stressed a call Danny Neese I have been with him numerous times and recommended him to quite a few people. It has always been a good time. 843-814-1614 good luck

There are LOTS of great guides in the Charleston area, but I have personally fished with a few that I know are on top of things that can teach you a lot. J.R. Waits, (Fish Call), Jamie Hough, (Flat Spot- he’s been killing them lately), Ben Alderman. I, again, know there are lots more, but I have had personal experiences with these mentioned.

I’ve hired guides to show me specific areas, and techniques, and in fact I’ve got a trip coming up in a week or so to do the same thing again. What I would tell you is make the guide aware of exactly what you expect. Don’t expect to go out to learn new techniques and put a lot of fish in the boat.

For instance in my particular case, our plans are to fish the creek and marshes, then some jetties, then if we have time, a near shore reef. We are using light tackle, and the rod and reels are ready to rig. I’ll have enough so we can do live bait and artificial without a lot of re-rigging. I want the gps on (I use my boat) so I can lay down navigation tracks, not to steal his honey holes. I’m generally looking at exploring more areas, and fishing less. I like to try an array of baits and techniques. I provide the boat, the tackle, ice, bait, gas, license, and even lunch. I generally want the guide to bring his expertise, and little else.

Guides put a lot of time into their work, perfecting technique, constantly keeping up with the fish, etc, so I understand that some are reluctant to share that info for the price of one charter. Other guides love to share their techniques, what they do and why they do it that way.

The worst thing you can do is hire a guide without telling him what your plans are, and then show up on one of his favorite spots the next week. But I agree with you, hiring a good guide can shorten your learning curve dramatically.

I 2nd, Capt John Fuss with Holy City Fishing Charters, he will take care of ya

Thanks for the recommendations guys. I’ll look into all the above!

Mandopickr, I will definitely be very clear about what I want to get out of the guided trip. Being a college student, I dont have the money to throw at multiple trips, so I want to get as much out of the time as possible (also why Im asking for yalls recommendations). Also, I love the idea of having the guide come on your boat and essentially hiring him just for the experience and knowledge, but I was unaware that this was even an option! It sounds like you’ve had some success in this department so I would love to know who you recommend.

Fishwish I would love to take you out for a couple hours, to teach you the ideas on how to catch saltwater fish. I grew up fishing fresh water and when I moved here I was in your same position. If your not looking for honey holes but looking for knowledge the best thing I can tell you is take your time. Start at low tide learn the area such as oyster beds creek mouths and the way the water runs on outgoing and in coming. Look at food source, entry points of the marsh and places where fish can eat and be safe. Next you need to learn the feeding styles of the fish your trying to catch. Then the bait to use and the different styles and presentation to the different fish. I think the most rewarding part is catching fish in a spot that you went out and spent time learning. It’s like catching fish on a fly that someone else tied. It’s fun but to catch a fish on a fly you tied, it’s an unreal feeling. If you have any questions feel free to call me or if you want to meet up and pick my brain for an hour or so let me know. If you want to go on a learning trip I’d love to take you and we will learn the know how’s to get you started.

“I have tomorrow open!”

Fishwish, I haven’t fished in my boat out of Charleston (yet), but rather hired guides in St Pete, and Naples to show me the ropes there. I still use the guide in St Pete if I’m just going down for a couple of days and don’t want to pull my boat. I’ll be using a guide on my boat up in Little River in a couple of weeks.

Fishwish,
As I mentioned in my post on your thread, I went down to MI and had a guide to give me fishing instruction, and show me the type of areas to look for fish, and which fish. I made it clear I wasn’t after his honey holes, but I wanted tracks to the jetty and back.

We spent about 3 hr in the creeks, and he showed me what to look out for in terms of navigation in the area, using my chart as a reference. We purposely went out at low tide, and came back in while the tide was still up. It was as much about where not to go at high tide, and what to avoid. We looked at so many potential fishing spots, I began to see the similarities between each.

The other three hrs were spent on 3 mile reef. He showed me rigging, how he stores his rigging, and other tackle. HE also discussed options for fishing the reef, including stuff like speed for trolling. Of course, we went into species specific rigging and techniques. HE also showed me how to modify my anchor to save it if it gets stuck, and how to anchor off of the reef. Since 3 mile no longer has a marker, he had a old bass fishing marker with him so we had a reference point. That tip is just a good example of little things that make the fishing much easier.

We also spent some time at the jetty, and the one mistake I may have made, would be losing an anchor set at the jetty and hitting the rocks before I realized.

Basically, he gave me information for the entire 6 hours. We did catch fish at the reef (too many sharks and sea bass), but we were specifically after sheephead, and struck out.

I’ve been back down twice, and the money was well spent. Lots of good tips made my trips more productive.

BTW, I spoke with about 5 guides before I selected this guy. Turned out giving instruction was right up his alley. Next fall I hope to hire a guide to do the same thing at Winyah. The LR guide didn’t respond to my calls and emails until the day before our scheduled date. Still may try LR a little later in the spring.

I have fished with these guys and would recommend:
John Fuss, Jamie Hough, tucker blythe. Can’t go wrong!

Don’t know if Jamie Hough ever comes on this site, but he’s definitely one of the best. Glad to see his name mentioned.

Capt. John Fuss with Holy City Fishing Charters, he will take care of ya, the man flat out catches fish and very personable, a guaranteed good time for sure.

Check out the March/April edition of Tideline mag. Might give you some info you are looking for. Has a great detail of charters in the area. Jamie Hough is one of the guides mentioned… I’m a lil partial to him plus he has a great set up. Good luck.
