Gentlemen,
I told my 10 year old son I would take him shark fishing and the year got away from me. I would like to know are the sharks gone? Anything very hot?
We are thinking of next weeekend. I have heard good and bad with charters and don’t have any relationships in the area.
Would appreciate any advice you could provide as far as charters, public access areas, party boats etc.
Goal is for the boy to have a blast without it destroying my wallet.
There are still sharks to be caught this time of year.
If you have a boat, put in at Folly River and head out toward the Stono inlet. Preferably with the tide moving and water about halfway up/down. Anchor near the shore and fish in 4-10 feet of water. Toss out some cut mullet on 8/0 circle hooks, or quartered crab on the same sort of hook. There are still bonnetheads and sharpnose around.
If you’re looking for anything bigger than 2-3 feet, I can’t help you much other than to just say “use bigger bait, take a bigger gaff”.
If you don’t have a boat and want to try from shore, Breach Inlet at Sullivan’s Island can be a good place, as can the north end of Folly Beach. Folly is a much longer walk but is going to be more productive. Head out toward the last rock groin on the tip of the island and fish on the south side of that rock groin. The waves tend to be much milder there and I’ve seen bonnetheads combing the shallow waters, literally a foot from the edge at low tide.

Fished the Grillage for the first time targeting sharks. Fished for about 5 1/2 hours and caught one 7 footer. Were using large cut mackerel for bait fishing in 50 feet of water about 500 yards of the northern tip of Sullivans Island.
castle pinckney…pretend you are targeting/fishing for trout and reds and you will catch all the sharks you want
