Charters in Cozumel

I am going diving in Cozumel for week and want to go fishing one of those days. Does anybody have any info on a legit deep water charter in Cozumel? One that puts you on good fish, not trolls around for 6 hours catching 2 cudas. Any info would be appreciated, thanks.

I took a “charter” out in Cozumel when we stopped there on a cruise once. I’ll tell you this, from what I saw. You get what you pay for. I didn’t want to spend a lot of money, and went the cheap route, and I got a cheap boat and cheap crew. The other boats around in the marina that looked nicer, had real equipment on them, and so forth were the ones that cost more. I don’t have a specific recommendation or name, but that was our experience there. It cost us $150 for two hours a head for our little excursion, just to give you an idea.

Did you catch fish?

If you’re looking for something “new” go spear fishing with Leo @ SpearfishingToday.com… Lots of fun. We go to Cozumel every year. The fishing there in my opinion is always hit or miss.

Hunt cold, Fish warm, work… Never

I went diving in Cozumel a few years ago, had a really good time. Water clarity is awesome and the fish are everywhere.

One slinger Mahi, as the captain decided to run at like 15+ knots back to the boat with the 3 lines still out in the water. Didn’t even know she had hooked up. We did have the down rigger pop, but nothing came of it. They tried to bottom fish with me when trolling became futile, and put on like 3 oz. weight on my line. I asked for more and was told (more like hand gestured because they didn’t speak any English) that this was enough. Given the current, I begged to differ, but they didn’t understand.

Its not offshore, but… on the north end of the island there are multiple large lagoons filled with bonefish year-round. I went with a guide during christmas two years ago and was able to catch a few on the fly. I also had a shot at a large school of permit. I believe this time of year is also good for tarpon in the lagoons. that would be my suggestion. Ive been on 4 “offshore” trips in cozumel and was disappointed every time, but I had a great time fishing the lagoons.

Thanks for all the input guys. I looked into the spearfishing with leo, but I figure I will be doing about 18 dives and in the water all week, I want to spend my off dive day to do some fishing.
