Chas. to Myrtle Beach by boat.

Anyone here done it?

I have been thinking about it and planning for it for a while and thought we’d be able to do it this year but our schedules got in the way.

So, now I’m planning for May/June of next year, except for Memorial Day.

It’ll be a weekend trip, just me and the wife, using the boat in my signature line-17’ Sea Hunt Triton w/90 Yamaha 4-stroke. Boat has a range of 150-180 miles on a full tank, depending on RPM’s.

Probably won’t be a LOT of fishing, but I WILL have a few rods and tackle aboard. 'Cause ya just never know!

We’ll leave Friday around 8am from Cypress Gardens landing, down the Cooper, across the harbor, then up the ICW.

Stop for lunch and fuel in Georgetown.

I’m figuring 7-8 hours, including stops, no-wake zones and slowing down for photos and sight-seeing. This is based on an estimate of around 130NM’s at 15-20MPH.

I will have extra gas, food, water, spare parts and everything else I can cram into the storage spaces because, usually, when ones prepares for the worst, it never happens.

I have an up-to-date GPS with current downloads, as well as charts.

Been motor-boating around Chas. for more than 35 years so I am well-versed and experienced. Just thought I’d throw that out in case I get one of those, “Well, if you’re a NOOB, first thing you need to do is…” posts.

Just seeing if anyone here has done it. How was it? Things to see and do? Recommended food and lodging? Any super-cool out-of-the-way places to explore?

I WILL post a full report, with photos, upon completion of this trip.

Thanks, bigt

Turned around in Conway. Personally like the Chas to Beaufort better. Just past GTown it’s black water and cypress trees. Not sure where you’re stopping but probably won’t take 7 hours.

Head South.

Curious why you like the Chas to Beaufort better. Not a whole lot for the wife to do down there, which I why I chose MB.

If it was just me? Heck yeah, and I am planning to do that also next year, but that’s a different topic.

I plan on taking our time, making a few stops and making sure SHE enjoys it.

I did this trip a few years back with 3 other boats. I would say go for it. Try to hit a show at barefoot landing to really top it off. The strecht of water from Georgetown to Mrytle is black water as mentioned. We encountered alot of floating driftwood in the water. Each of us hit stuff and one boat damaged their prop. Two words of advice for that trip “spare prop”.

It’s a salt-marsh ride the whole way and not black water. The marina is secure, locked, and they allow 1 hr.use of their car for “supplies” if necessary (last time I was there). You can stay at B&B and almost everything is within walking distance or biking, which the B&B’s offer. It’s more relaxed that the Grand Strand’s commercialized persona. Hilton Head and Defauskie Is. are a day ride away. Different strokes I guess but do both…

I just find it comical that you have a boat in Charleston and want to come to MB. Lived there 31 years, I can’t see anything worth seeing from the ditch. Really nothing within walking distance from the water except Barefoot. It ain’t worth it, unless you are into touristy shops, and bad food. Too each their own, but to me the scenery get pretty bland once you get past Wachesaw and Murrell’s Inlet area. If it were me, I’d stop at Washesaw, rent a slip and a car and take her to PI shops, go have some good food in MI, and turnaround and go back.

Thanks for all the info folks.

I may have to rethink this trip…

You might think about trailering the boat up to Southport and exploring the area around there.I’ve always wanted to do that.

I suggest the Daufuskie trip myself , the two sounds you have to cross can be a little ruff at times but a much better ride and the wife will enjoy it more.

Ashamed to admit lived in chas 30 some years and never went to Beaufort by water. Moved to Bluffton and just last Sunday ran from HHI to edisto marina, then to Dawhoo to pick my son up and then back to HHI. 3hrs from Dawhoo to marker 13 with a little unsuccesful detour to monkey island. Wish I had done it sooner, very nice ride, one of those makes you feel lucky to see scenery trips.

One day I guess we will take the ride to Savannah and dufuskie.

I grew up in Wilmington and now live in Bluffton. Made several ditch trips with the wife for over 3 day weekends. I love the whole section in between Georgetown and Savannah and don’t think you can go wrong with any spot in between.

The scenery around the ICW in the ACE Basin (St Helena Sound) area is breathtaking

Thanks John. My DIL grew up on Daufuskie and has expressed interest in making this trip with us next year. She was there when it was still pristine and really hates to see all the development that has taken place.

How’s work going, buddy?

Well, you SHOULD be ashamed!

Along with probably most of us!

Would you elaborate on your unsuccessful trip to Monkey Island, please? That is one of the stops we plan on seeing.

Thanks HH. Maybe we’ll just motor up to G’town for lunch one day and plan our weekend trip to the south.

After studying many maps, forums, reviews, etc., it appears that the ditch, once one passes Georgetown, is just that- a manmade ditch, for the most part. Not too different than the Tailrace or Diversion Canals. Not much to see or do.

I see why everyone is saying, “Go south”.
