So, soon as college unleashes me for turkey day break, Im high tailin as far away from the salt as possible and goin back home.( lake russell). Planning a trip friday to go and fish the DH section of the chatooga seeing as its only a 2 hour drive, what do yall think? any advice on any hot patterns to use? Only fished the tooga in the spring and early summer never in the fall… I have read hare’s ear and prince nymphs are a pretty safe bet… just wondering if anyone had any other ideas… sat down at the vise sunday and cooked up a few drys a couple nymphs and a streamer or 3… even tied a couple egg’s in case of hard times… oh yeah… just a update… finally broke down and got the Simms Blackfoot… freakin sweet… cant wait to get em smellin like fish this weekend… Thanks.
I have heard it has been on fire, I gotta pass a lot of good water to get out of the Mts to get there but I love that river, I would drag big rubber leg beadhead princes, or some big muddlers weighted down to get some of dem big nasty browns a movin.
Good Luck
Riverbum… That will be awesome! just tied up some Muddlers and soft hackles… hope the rain does not come into play on this trip… even worse i would hate to pull in and it look like a fashion show for the orvis catalog, bunch of rubbaheads from ATL or somethin out fishin while thier wifes are chasin the next Black Friday sales…
Water was decently high… Caught one 12in. rainbow on a ■■■■■■■■■ hares ear nymph I tied, my old man caught similar rainbow on a prince nymph. Reports were about the same from everyone I talked too… Now its back to the grindstone in cherry grove, hope to find time to sneak out in the salt in between finals…
I fished the Chattooga DH last weekend when home for TG. Had a real hot bite on a crazy looking streamer…bar bell eyes with a brown body and black and white hackle tail… Lost the only Two I had. Also had real good luck on the Y2K fly… But Im just an orvis wearing rubber necker up from Atlanta what do I know haha
Had a giant brown swim up to me in waist deep water there last fall, there are some giants there but they’ll break your heart. This time of year you couldn’t pay me to leave those big lake russell stripers for trout though.
Colt, Im lucky to live about 3 miles from russel and about 4 from clarks hill ( thurmond)… Whenever the dam is running water, the stripers cant be beat. However the trout waters seem to have it beat as far as scenery.
grassfisher, sorry I did not follow up on this post. I ended up not going. My ankle is jacked up, I thought it might be a good idea not a to hike a few miles and stand on it all day. Glad to hear you caught something.
