Chattooga River-Low Water Bridge/Burrels Ford area

Anyone fished this area in awhile? Going up in a few weeks on a guy trip and wanted to know what flies and areas? Thanks

I’ve rafted down the Chatooga. Keep in mind that Deliverance was filmed on that river, so if you hear banjo music, you better start paddling something fierce.

“Sire, it belongs in truth to the Church of God, in whose name I speak, to endure blows and not to inflict them. But it will also please your Majesty to remember that she is an anvil that has worn out many hammers.”…Theodore Beza

I will keep that in mind!

I have fished the area a lot over many years, but not in the last 12 months. Oct/Nov are great months above Burrells Ford, and below it as well if you like stocked trout. Flows were great all summer long, for a change, so fall fishing should be nice. In the fall, I’d pray for cool, dreary, overcast days–though I know this is not great camping weather. In that weather, #16-18 blue winged olives will come off slowly all day long and fish will sip them out of the surface film on those big, slow pools. Challenging and tons of fun. Otherwise, prospect around with with elk-hair caddis, stimulators, Adams, or whatever, or throw buggers and streamers. With nothing else to go on, I’d generally toss a #16 yellow stimulator with a pheasant tail dropper and do OK. Browns will be getting horny and you’ll probably move a few big heart-stoppers in shallow water as you’re wading around. Last few hours before dark will be tons of fun most days. Feel free to shoot me a PM if you’d like a few more details.

Camped and fished there Sun and Mon this past week…stopped in and saw Karen and Carl at the CRFS and they had some great info on flies and areas to fish. Had good luck with golden stonefly and #18 pheasant tail hopper/dropper set up. Had some REALLY good luck with some other stuff and areas if you want to call or text me at 704-502-7833. Got a lot of good current info on the area…heading to Charleston to fish tomorrow and would love to trade some info…caught a 21" holdover brown…they are really putting on the feed bag right now!!!..GREAT time to chase trout!!!..Jeff

How was the traffic? I want to take that same trip, but I was a little concerned about the fishing pressure up there. Thanks!

We had a great time and the weather was awesome! The only down side was that while we went over to Burrells Ford someone came by our camp and stole all the food and beer. They didnt take the Yeti coolers, radio, or other pricey items so we were not to bummed. A buddy of mine caught a small mouth bass and we all caught some trout with the largest about 18". We stopped by Chattooga Fly Shop and they gave us some great info and it was packed around Burrells Ford but Low Water Bridge area wasnt to bad.
