cheap fly rod combo

anyone got suggestions on a cheap beginer fly rod combo? 7 weight for reds about right?

Reddington is the best fly rod for the money. I think Haddrells in WA has some. I have two 8 wt. and a 9 wt. One of my 8s is a Reddington and it is by far the best casting. For reels I like Ross but they are pretty expensive.

If a man wakes up early to go fishing he 's sleep deprived, If a man wakes up late to go fishing he’s fish deprived

I picked up a GREAT Okuma 8-9 wt reel at CA in WA. I agree wiht the reddington. I use an Orvis that I love, they have some good beginner rods that are affordable.

“We don’t have a plan and we’re stickin to it!”

They have a pretty nice redington combo rod at charleston angler mt p, I believe its around 275.00. They are 8wt I think.

These guys are more qualified to answer than I am, but I am happy with my Pflueger President series 8wt rod/reel. New on Ebay for around $120 shipped. I am also a beginner, so this setup would probably feel terrible to these guys.

Last night I lay in bed looking up at the stars in the sky and I thought to myself, where the heck is the ceiling?

Nauti, this is just my oppinion but I would buy a fairly decent rod and line and a cheap reel. Reddington, Lamiglass, Temple Fork, St Croix and all the major manufacturers sell good rods. You want one about seven or eight weight that fits your style. The slower and usually cheaper rods make casting easier due to the fact they have a very long reaction time and the cast unfolds more delicate and slowly. These rods will cover your mistakes. The Fast action higher priced rods will take critical timing to cast but throw a line much further as there is more power in the tip. That said if you want to fish salt I would suggest at least a medium fast action rod to over come the wind and size of the flies. Any of the top saltwater lines will do well just be aware that lines saying they are tropical usually get very stiff in cold weather. For the reel I would suggest an Okuma Airframe reel (I think they have changed the name of these reels but they still sell them). These reels are made of graphite so they don’t corrode, cost about $40, and spare spools are $20. They have a decent drag that will handle most anything you will tackle inshore. Not having to strip your line off your spool and rinse your reel to keep it from coroding is a blessing! I always have a floating line and an intermediate sink tip handy so I would suggest two spools. You should be able to get set up for around $300. Spending money on a cheap rod, reel and line is a sure way to turn you off on fly fishing. Even if you went out and spent $300 and didn’t care for it you could sell the outfit on this site and still not be out much more than a cheap $100 set would set you back! Be aware cheap sets are not usually fisherman or saltwater friendly.

Jerms, I totally agree. I love my President reels and Trion rods. I can’t go alot so is does’nt pay to have a $1200.00 combo(G-Loomis/Tibor). If I was guideing or fished several times a week, that would be different. Like I have said in previous post, they have a great drag system, they are machined aluminum, and the rods are IM 8 graphite with an aluminum reel seat.

I just picked up a Redington cross water from Cabelas for $99 comes complete w/ backing, line & leader. They’ve also got a Redfish fly asst. on sale.
This will be my intro to flyfishing SALT. So wish me luck.

I have a Pfleuger 8 foot 8wt medium fast action that I’ve had for several years. I made the mistake of not stripping line 1 time and have a fair amount of corrosion on the reel.
Last year I swapped the real for a DIRT CHEAP graphite I picked up somewhere (really can’t remember, K Mart maybe). The graphite doesn’t have a decent drag, but it does have a palming rim.

It’s not hard to cast 100 feet using good timing and a double haul with this set up, but prefer 50-60 foot casts for control

Pleuger is not a bad setup for $100 or so

So much water, So little time

By the way
One of the BEST things you can do to enjoy yourself is to find a fly fishing class at a community college. I took one several years ago for $50 for 11 weeks meeting 2 nights per week. It was a great combination of classwork and practical. We did basic fly tying, casting from beginning to advanced and took a couple of “field trips”
One was to the mountains of western NC for Trout and the other was bass fishing at one of the lakes.

The class was taught by a guide with 5 IGFA line class records to his credit.

Here’s the combo I got from Cabelas

Go for the Sage Fli Series. You get a good rod and warranty for about $250.

Actually my favorite is the one right up next to the reel minus all that jazz on the tail end. Man its good to see other ppl are learning about that wonderful fly that the reds cant seem to resist:dizzy_face:
