As you revel in your “steal,” tell the cashier that you hate Obama but don’t mind supporting a company that takes over $2billion of your tax dollars per year to pay their employees’ medical insurance instead of allowing any of them to be “full time” in a 24/7 operation and footing the normal portion of their bill.

You are paying more than you think, you just do not realize it.

Great thing is…

One can still shop where they want

Notice how hard it is to get Gamagatzu jigheads at your tackle store lately? Know how easy it is to find them at Walmart? You know how good their quality is, right? Check back in 5 years when all of their production is shifted to Walmart (if it isn’t already) and Wally says, “OK, now I want to sell them for 10/$5 or sell them somewhere else”. Gamagatzu will drop their standards and put their name on a cheap azz hook and another companies reputation will be down the drain.

This is kind of a neat article about how Walmart lures businesses in and then strangles them.

What fishing products are you referring to as “made in the US”? Most soft plastics are poured here, but a huge percentage of lures that require assembly and have to fall in Wal-Mart’s price range depend on foreign labor. Count the peg space in Wal-Mart for lures and accessories. It is dominated by Pradco (Bomber, Smithwick, Heddon, etc.), Pure Fishing (Berkley), Strike King, and Mustad. All utilize (heavily) foreign labor, whereas 20 years ago they did not. It’s a sad fact of the business, but I can only think of a FEW products that are made entirely here.

I prefer to do business with the local shops, but just thought it was worth pointing out that a lot of the fishing tackle sold at Walmart is in fact made right here in the US.

Vin- Gamakatsu lost substantial peg space in Wal-Mart for sticking to their prices about 3 or 4 years ago. Wal-mart dropped many of their bass and inshore salt water hooks and gave the space mostly to Mustad and Eagle Claw. What I don’t understand is why they gave some space to Owner, as they are similarly priced and of the same quality. I don’t think you will have to worry about either of those 2 Japanese companies compromising on quality because they are the ACTUAL maufacturer from raw materials. Their process will remain the same even though they will continue to be pressured to lower their price points. The entire industry had to bring their standards UP due to these companies’ innovations in chemical sharpening.

Bill Lewis Lures(They make rat-l-traps) got dropped from wm because they wanted to increase the price of their lures.
