Check Engine Light

I’m getting a warning horn and a check engine light on a '96 Evinrude 2-stroke 175hp. This is at startup and low engine speeds mainly, and sometimes after hitting a wake. Motor runs good at all speeds, peeing good. Other warnings occur for overheat, that’s not it. I am told that this engine does not have a computer; that it can only be a fuel obstruction. So I have put new tubing on at the back of the boat, new squeeze bulb and new fuel/water separator…and new internal fuel filter … horn it went away and then came back. The only tubing I have not changed is the tubing down to the gas tank. Yesterday, I made a full throttle run for about 5 minutes, and the horn/light quit doing that; I’ll check it again today and see if it comes back.
BTW, fuel tubing can break down inside; it has a clear plastic inner liner that can start to discolor and crumble - - maybe ethanol, or just age?
I am also thinking about changing the ignition switch, and also borrowing a gas tank from somebody and running on that for a check.
wierd, anybody else heard of this?

be very careful
the VRO pump on that motor can begin failing, and it will cause the very symptom you are describing
when it fails you will be rebuilding or repowering

Yep, been there done that. If you have VRO, I would remove it and begin pre-mixing. Or spend money troubleshooting and replacing the system.

And you are sure your warning buzzer sequence is NOT an overheat warning? How old is the water Pump impeller?

The VRO system has been long ago disconnected; I pre-mix. It is my understanding that the only meaning to that warning horn on the 1996 V-6 Evinrudes is, fuel obstruction. I have cleaned the thermostats. When this engine overheats, it cuts you down to 2000 rpm and you limp home…I also see the steam.
Thanks, I will go read my manual about a VRO warning horn - - it may still be coming on, and also, I did have a recent flooding of the battery box and battery switch…hmmm, could have accidentaly triggered that VRO warning…but, there’s a warning light for that, too.
Anyway, thank you for your ideas, I am going to figure this out, (**()it,

Been down that road with the fuel restriction warning light… and after replacing all fuel lines, filters, bulbs, anti siphon valve, pickup screen etc thought I had it licked right up until I took it for one more test ride before my buyer drove down from Ohio to pick up boat… motor burned up two pistons. Over $3500 to bore, re-ring cylinders and install two new pistons. VRO pump was less than 18 months old when this happened. If you are already pre-mixing then restriction would seem to be at the motor? Get it to a good mechanic quick.
