It looks like it is a lot closer than the pole in the picture. Maybe the camera person or a third holding the thing up on a separate line out of the picture. If’n you really wanted the world to know how huge this thing was, you would lay it on a fish ruler or something else to give reference. Still a neat catch, but I’m doubting the size.

The article said 18 in. That doesn’t seem to hard to believe. The picture makes it appear larger.
Yes, some guy fishing off a dock took a picture and said it was 18" long. I bet I can get a picture of a lizard in my back yard and say it’s 10’ long.
Amazingly we don’t have the actual crustacean or a picture of it next to a ruler. Notice how Florida fish and game doesn’t say anything other than its a type of mantis shrimp. It looks just like the thousands of mantis shrimp ive caught over the years, it’s just really close to the camera. Also notice how the edges are translucent. If it were really that big, they would be solid.
