CHECKIN IN

Just wanted to say hey to you all. I am new to your web site, have been reading your post for a few months and finally registered. I run out of Beaufort on a 225 KeyWest CC named REEL NAUTI with a 250 Yammy.I’m sure I will meet some of you all soon if any of you head south.I have not been out wetting lines for a few weeks but that will soon change after this #$%# for weather changes. Have mostly bottom fished in the past so I will be asking some questions now and then. Speaking of, Are the Tuna this far down yet? Can any one give me a few pointers on the hows, weres and whats to catch them. Never caught a Tuna before but they eat great.

tuna are a myth…

Welcome to CF.com I caught one black fin in local waters by accident when bottom fishing, but solo seems to be pretty good at getting them consistantly. Good luck!

Welcome!
I only boated 3 blackfin this year. I believe they were all caught on mirrolures. The biggest one we caught hit hard enough to cause the lip of the lure to start separating from the head of the lure. I don’t have any pics, you’ll have to take my word for it…

Guys, the blackfin are here right now. Find the structure, bait, and warmer water, and they are there if you know how to catch them.

Goat is right, I know someone out of Hilton Head that has been slaying them. Use the same technics that were talked about this spring. (WTFB)

Reelnauti- Blackfin tuna are plentiful in our waters but the yellowfin are on vacation south of the outer banks for the last season. I am no tuna master but have caught quite a few, all but 1 while trolling the break. The other on a vert jig. If the bite is on, they will hit most anything you would normally be pulling. As the season progresses they tend to get a little boat shy so most of us pull lines way back (I mean WAY back). Everyone has their favorites but I always pull a pink boone bird trailing a green machine as my shotgun, a cedar plug somewhere in the spread, a squid spreader centered in the spread, and a few sea witches (green/yellow and pink). We usually catch one or two blackfin every other trip. I am a believer in floro leaders for tuna fishing but others will say it’s not necessary given the cost- you spend on everything else so I would hate to miss that prize over an extra $20.

Alcon,
Thanks for all of the feed back and help. I hear the blacks are out there now but my question is, do I have enough boat to get out there and catch one? Do the blacks come in as close as R7 or so.I have been told that the tuna get shy by more than one now so, are we talking lures back 100’s of yards behind the boat? Im sitting in snow country spending the holidays with my family but, I will be back the first week of Jan and I hear that this is the time of the year when most of the tuna are caught. So, I suppose when I get home I will just take in all the knowledge that you all are willing to share and give it a shot. JD, I will shoot you a note or a phone call when I return and definitely take you up on your offer. ALCON have a great holiday season and I will see you all on the huge pond in Jan.

I have been way out in my boat(70-80miles). Not saying that it’s for everyone. Just be prepared for the worst and study the many forecast tools that are available!!!
