check out ravens fork, its catch and release trophy water just minutes from cherokee
All the water in Cherokee is descent, once you walk a bit away from the crowds. The Oconaluftee flows right through town and is loaded with trout. The reservation owns and runs its own hatchery, and they stock severeal 10lb trout weekly to keep things interesting. sweet!! A olive bugger trailed by a tiny soft hackle is devestating on em here. The Tuck (tuckaseegee) is closeby and (off the res) has fished really good for me the last few times. Lots of good water,
ravens creek is still in the reservation, Bunches and Soco creeek are really cool too. They will give u a map when you buy your $7 daily permit. there is also a good flyshop n town with a friendly and helpful group workin/hangin out.
i am staying in bryson city, which in my understanding, is relatively close to cherokee. scotty d: is the delayed harvest section of the tuckaseegee near cherokee? i really appreciate everyones help, im not familiar with the area at all, so any little bit of info helps.
The delayed harvest section is in Sylva about 40 minutes away. One of my favorite streams in all the park is deep creek that comes into byrson city. You can do a 30 minute hike up from the campground and get away from the crowds. This is WILD trout fishing so bring your a game. There is a large hatchery supported section running from the park into town. It will have been fished hard, but there are always fish that survive.
Cherokee is OK if you like big dough belly stockers. And Company. The luftee just out of town half way up to newfound gap is park waters and is a great fish. The bradly fork is a short hike in from smokemont and is one of the recently added best streams in the park. Consult a map. We had a nice little .5 mile hike in both times we fished it and we did some bush wacking as well. Nice Brownies and I caught a 14" fish in these waters, which is big for the park. There is no car access to the bradly fork.
The thing I would really recomend is getting up high on Deep. Take a day and start it early. hike out of the campground and be prepared to go about 4 miles (1.5 hours) You will do a Vigorous climb. After the climb you come back to the creek. Fish up from here as long as you like. Come back. Make sure you have a buddy or at least tell someone where you are going and when to expect you back.
is deep creek above Smokemont campground? thats a good brown fishery too. yes, the tuck is close to BC and Cherokee
I live in Waynesville, Bryson is not too far from Cherokee bout 15 minutes or so, and another 15 or so to the Tuck the best water on the tuck is near Western Carolina Univ in Sylva, right now is the kill time and the dang tuck gets soo muddy when it rains due to construction on its banks, Deep creek is out from Bryson but you gotta get up above the tubers. Raven Fork, huge fish in a bit of a barrell but worth a day stickin fish measured in lbs. not inches. Luftee is great Smokemont campground just past the park welcome center is good, right now you wanna be fishing the park early am and later pm, not to say not to fish daytime but look for shade spots middle of the day, and deffinetly be ON the water after 7 pm if possible. Check out Little River Outfitters for good fishing reports, it’s on the TN side of the park which has great water too.
If it swims throw a fly at it!
thanks fellas, that helps out tremendously. ill give it a try and hopefully i will have a good report for you guys.
