If I side mount the pump and put a filter on it i believe it’ll solve my issues. When I suspended the pump it worked great for 5+ hours which ended our day so no that it quit after 5 hours or anything.
Socks idea wasn’t mine…Lol…But yes it could be done if I was trying to hotrod an insulated#8203; bucket/drum…
I run a high dollar filter tank, but it’s because I got a really good deal on it. If it wasn’t for that I would be running keep alive style tank but on a much larger scale (75-100gal) depending on time of yr, bait, etc… when using normal size herring only I prefer my pump to be separated from my bait.
Start catching and keeping your own bait and you will see a big difference in scale loss. Or even buy the bait then bring it home and baby it for a few days and then use it. You will see a big difference in the bait quality…But it’s a learning process and you will lose many in the process. And then once you have figured it all out, your still gonna lose a bunch… Sometimes a while tank…

I remember when the Chip Bragg special was sitting on the towers with a homemade cooler tank full of half live herring. You’ve come a long way Chip.
Florida Boy, I’m pretty sure fogman uses a bubbler in his built in tank. He catches more than most people, so it must work. I personally saw a spike in my success when I finally gave Chip my bait tank cooler and bought a SB II. Herring that are lively are much better than herring that are just alive.
Shooot … all you have to do is use the “Chip Bragg Special Sock” method … have those scales worked out in no time …
Side Note: I’d suggest using cleaner socks than Chip’s … </font id=“red”>
…and I thought that was me I was smelling.

Wellcraft V-20 sportfish with a 200 Evinrude
I also remember a big wellcraft watching me sit in a 15’ Jon boat at the towers…And I couldn’t keep a rod in the water with an old motor guide cable steer trolling motor…Ha… yes a long way indeed…I don’t miss those days 1 bit!!!

Yep Steely… I still use a Marine Metals Power Bubbles 12 volt pump with air stone in my 33 gallon live well. It works just fine for a days fishing even when I can get my hands on big bait. I would get a filtered stand alone tank, however, if I were keeping bait for more than just a day.
Any particular hook that is best when fishing the ocean herring with out the stinger?
I always try to match my hook size to my bait size …
I used to use a 1/0 exclusively, but it hinders the movement of smaller baits …
Ocean Herring are not small baits … I had one 25’ behind my board pulling them at .9 and it was outrunning our boards when Stripers would try to hit them …
We will use anything from a 4/0 to an 8/0 when pulling Ocean Herring … I have used stingers before, but I do not hook them into the fish … I simply trail the stinger - usually a 3/0 Treble … It’s better for the fish, better for my hands, and better for the Osprey because you WILL lose these baits to the birds … ESPECIALLY if you are in any of the main creeks on the Chapin side of the lake …
