Didn’t do crap for us today. A lot of action, big fish finning, smashing behind the hook, nothing to show for the big bait. Contrary to what others say, won’t do it again without stingers. Also Won’t pull 10 big bait spreads.
I really don’t know how my name got attached to any of these herring…I do well with them (without stingers)…I am usually the first to have them on the lake each year, but that’s cause I go catch them myself. Wouldn’t ever call anything attached to my name “special”…Lol…
Put those stingers on those herring and see what happens. You will get less blow ups, and will hook more birds… The stinger changes the action of the bait. I use them from time to time but I can truly see a difference with and without them.
A very wise striper fisherman told me once…“if she is a big girl AND she is hungry, she WONT miss…PERIOD!” (Regarding stinger hooks)
“All fisherman lie. And if they say otherwise, then they’re lying”
I will say, and I’ve told those fishing with me, that “it is called fishing, not catching”. Most understand that. If a big one gets on my bait, there is no doubt when she wants it and hits it. Stingers or not, she’ll get it and usually get hooked. You can fish for bites or you can fish for BIG fish. There is a difference.
That being said, I have great respect for what Chip (Murraymaker) has told/taught me.
Does it ALWAYS happen the way he says? No. But I’ll stand by his methods, wisdom, knowledge all day long, PERIOD. Over the long run, it works out. Keep at it and it will work out.
And, he’s a great guy to boot who’s more than willing to share his knowledge/experience…
Just saying…

I use smaller bait in the spring and just before. Pulled small herring yesterday on Hartwell and caught two stripers, but also caught three crappie over 13 inches. We had several hit and their sides ripped off on short strikes but that’s fishing.
I’d rather fish than eat.

Can’t blame anyone if you’re going to be … “crazy” … enough to pull 10 Ocean Herring behind your boat … well, can’t blame anyone but yourself, that is …
The only reason we ended up having the big girls out there in full force is we had pump failures early causing bait not to do well. Once we got it fixed we only lost a couple bait small and big. But they weren’t doing well so put the expensive bait on the hooks to revive.

Spent more time fighting that F’er than fishing. It got a facelift but haven’t put a filter around the pump and the big scales were clogging the port for the air hose. Didn’t account for meggo scales. After talking to the genius aka my dad, he suggested floating the pump to prevent settling scales on the bottom. Worked perfect with blowing maybe 2 more times on the air hose to clear a scale or two the rest of the day. Believe I’m going to side mount the pump and get the filter for it. Everytime I go out I learn a lot and realize how dumb I really am all at the same time.
Mike you need to just invest in a upflow tank and be done with it. I love my sb2 and there is other tanks out there with just about the same concept. Sounds like to me you got a overcrowding issue going on if you are jamming that small tank full of big bait and small bait and expecting them to all be a happy family. You might be able to do some rigging to get a better filtration on your current tank idk but I would just spend the money once on a good quality tank and be done with it ain’t none of them cheap but when it comes to pulling a healthy lively bait out of a good tank and you have your water right it’s well worth it just my o2
I copied the Striper Soup, 26 gal Moeller tank. Works well so far. I just need to insulate it for the hot months. I think I’ve got about $175.00 into it.

I just copied from pictures on the Striper Soup website. If you’re anywhere near Red Bank, come on over & you can get a good look at it. Just give me a call or text.

I have $0 invested in my Keep Alive 30 gallon tank. Other than the new pump and $5 LED’s. I’ve fished all months with it and Never had an issue with lazy or dead bait. I’ll get this pump figured out and roll with it. I also have very limited space in my boat up front and do not want to run a tank out the open space in the back. Maybe once I upgrade to the 23’ inshore boat I’ll upgrade the other stuff.

Go to Academy and buy you the 12 volt bubbler they have for $35. That is all I use in my 20 gallon tank and I have no issues. If you are having scales in your tank then they will clog your pump up everytime the way the keep alives are designed. I think this will help!
