2002 Yamaha F100 that all of a sudden bit the dust with water in oil and 3 of 4 cyls. No warning. Less than 500 hours and good owner maintenance. Is this unusual?

That is not a long time or a lot of hours for a motor that has been maintained. I’m always thinking about which manufacturer to go with when I need a new one. Just talking to a guy yesterday and he told me Charleston is mostly a Yamaha place. Mainly because there are a lot of people who work on Yamaha’s.

Only 500 hours makes me think it sat for a very long time

Yes, it had to. 500 hours in 15 years is only 30 hours a year. Sitting unused for so long is much worse than running them. The age is more important than the hours in this case.

Larry’s right, that’s my thinking too! 30 hrs a year? 3-10 hr. trips or 10-3 hr trips! Good luck on a rebuild or exchange!

Yes it would sit for several months but I would crank it on ear muffs and “exercise” things. FIRST five years it got used more than last five years. Motor also had the “making oil” issue but I changed oil more frequently until solved. Many hours trolling. Most trips around 5 hours

INTERNAL CORROSION CAN HAPPEN EVEN WHEN A MOTOR IS SITTING.
