Is it ok to use gl5 in my 2015 Yamaha 20hp 4 stroke lower unit? Also ,how much would you charge me to install a new water pump in a 2002 Yamaha 70 hp 2 stroke as a precautionary measure. Never been taken apart before and I want to put in a new thermostat also.Every thing is working fine now.Do you have a sister whose first name starts with the letter A ,one of my sons says he may have went to school with her.Just wondering,it’s a small world haha.
I don’t know what “gl5” is
a waterpump install is $199 plus parts
add $75 for thermostat. that’s parts and labor
yes on the sister

I’m sorry if I was less than clear but gl5 is the api service rating number for the 80w90 gear oil I was thinking about using in the foot of my motor. I don’t have any gl4 left but still have plenty of gl5.Thanks in advance. I will contact you about the water pump soon as I get time. I’m working 80hr weeks as this is my crazy time of year.
I don’t know what the difference is between gl4 and gl5
gl4 is the 80w90 rated oil for your motor.
we use 80w90, in everything except the V-8, which is what Yamaha recommends.
I cant tell you its okay to use anything else, as I have no personal experience using anything except gl4 80w90

Sman, I’m surprised you’d get off that much liquor money to have your water pump changed.
Being superstitious is bad luck.

Well It will cost me less than getting you and the boys to help.Last time ,my place looked like a Hank Jr / Mud rally event was held there. I swore then , I would just pay to get my projects done.By the way,the lock has been changed on my shop after the beer and deer loins disappeared mysteriously.
Just the cost of doing business. As great as Charleston Marine is, they don’t have our entertainment value.
Being superstitious is bad luck.

I beg to differ…
across the street yesterday, one of our neighbors was all over the news.
completely naked person walking down the side walk and up the on ramp onto the express way.
not to mention the shop across the street works on exotic sports cars, and they test drive right by our door.

Okay, didn’t mean to low ball your entertainment value. Fast cars and naked joggers is pretty hard to beat.

sman, GL5 is not always acceptable or backward-compatible for GL4, but in your case it would be fine. Gl5 is has a more EP (extreme pressure) additives That your 20hp would not need where larger units do. Some of your Larger Transmission that used a lot of Brass / copper bushings and synchronizers the additives used for higher EP applications are suppose to be corrosive. I personally have never seen an issue in any of the Manual Saginaw or Muncey manuals we use in racing using the GL5.
Where an issue could result is GL-5 has a lower coefficient of friction due to the higher levels of EP additives over GL-4, Which could result in synchros not engaging as effectively. Means you might feel a slight drag when shifting gears as the synchros are not allowing the gears to slow and mesh as quick do to less friction.
As for using Yamaha branded lube, I would say exactly what Mr. Chris has stated. But know that all Manufactures have to stand behind warranty on any manufactures lubrication if it meets all set standards. When it comes to arguing that you did, that could become an issue depending on what service department/dealer you use. I know Cat recommends only Cat branded lubricants. Mobil makes the oil for Cat. Someone makes the Oil for Yamaha, they don’t, it could be a proprietary blend just for them, but I doubt it.
In a nutshell the higher an oil’s GL-rating, the more pressure can be sustained without any metal-to-metal contact taking place between transmission/ gear box components.
