Christmas Present

Don’t know what I did to deserve it, but the wife got me a pair of Penn Conquer 2000’s this year. What rods should I match them up with? What kinda braid should I use? I’m stoked, can’t wait to break them in.

Check out the PENN Legion inshore rods. The LEGIN612S69 and LEGIN815S7o would be a great match up for Trout and reds.

When I bought a new reel earlier this year, I was headed in one direction on a rod and the boys at Hadrells guided me in a different direction, which I am very pleased with (Star rod). I don’t think the rod is necessarily any better (or worse for that matter) than the direction I was headed, but the warranty was significantly different. I’d go see them for their advice based on your planned use for the set up. I’m a fan of Penn reels but have not been happy with their rods. I had to have two different Penn rods repaired this year due to guides breaking.

I’ll probably get booed but consider an UglyStik.I own several and I love each one. I have been loyal to Shakespeare ever since I did an internship with them years ago when I was in the USC business school.
I use Powerpro braid-works great.

Rod depends on what you want to spend, I think the shimano clarus is a very dependable rod for the money (80) but if you want to get something on the expensive side get a g loomis. As for braid, yellow 10-15 pound power pro is the only line I will put on my reels.

Ugly sticks are the only rods i use! they are a great rod for their price range! i love the st. croix but they are just to expensive, you do not need a 100 rod. If i can catch fish on my $125 then why do i need $300 worth of stuff?

A small fish in hand is better than big fish in promise

Ditto. I’ve got a Shimano Clarus that I love, but I held that Legion and was like “WOW! Lighter and stronger!”. Worth a look as Penn is getting as serious about in-shore rods as they are reels. Chas Angler has them. I’m sure Hadrell’s does, too.

I wound up getting a Temple Fork Outfitters Gary Loomis rod. $60 more than the Legion but it screamed “TAKE ME!”

Way to get on the “nice” list!
