My father went out today and caught 40+, (90% keepers), in the rivers, but they were very selective. Throwing the idiot rig,( bucktail / spoon) , was a waste of time. Nothing over 28 inches.
Doesn’t read like they were too selective with y’all catching that many. Guess you had what they selected. Congrats on a good outing and Merry Christmas!

It was one of those days when most bird chasers got frustrated and left because the bite was so tough on conventional tackle. All fish yesterday were caught on jigs less than 2 inches in length on light line.
I’ve seen the same thing with the spoons in cooler water many times. They seem to want a snack instead of a big meal. I usually catch a lot of nice fish on the small spoons in winter.
Talking small spoons remind me of putting a batch of newly caught small thread fins in my big home tank! I watched as some of the went straight to the bottom and quivered and would swim up and down about 2-3" very fast. I need to learn to duplicate it with the spoon.
Boatpoor, We call that action the jiggle. Sometimes it will trigger a bite when nothing else is working. It works near the bottom and in suspended fish too.
Yep. That’s exactly what we look to mimic when jigging the metal. Drives the fish crazy.
