Chum or Troll

Planning a NC bluefin trip in Feb and was wondering which method is more effective. If anyone out there has any advice on this fishery it would be much appreciated. This will be my first attempt at this.

A buddy of mine keeps his boat at Teach’s Lair in Hatteras and I go up there four or five times a year and everyone up there trolls for tuna because of the sharks. If you are going after tuna put in at Oregon Inlet shorter run to the tuna grounds from Hatteras it is about a 50 to 60 mile run

We are planning to head up when we get a weather window in jan or feb. We will fish out of Morehead though as we have a free place to stay. Looking to hire a local guide to help.

Have you done this trip before?

No. This will be our first trip up there. Trying to dig up as much info as I can.

Definitely look into heavy duty jigging gear. We went twice last year and trolled only. Marked a ton of big fish and even made a circle around a school busting and didn’t hook up. The guys set up jig all had fish at the boat ramp and several releases both times.

Baseball, what kind of jigs were they using? Butterfly jigs maybe?

Check out the Oregon inlet and Teach’s Lair fishing report before you plan your trip if they are catching them up there you will know as soon as they show up GOOD LUCK

Yea just regular butterfly jigs it looked like to me. I’m sure they were beefed up w bigger hooks and stronger rings and whatnot. We marked bunches of fish and kept looking for one of the trolling rods to go down. Lots of guys were trolling and would stop and drop when they marked fish and there were a few charter boats I’m sure that had side scan sonar or something bc they would stop and some guys would drop jigs and others would throw BIG poppers then pick up and move a few hundred yards and do it again… My family and I are gonna charter a boat this winter to see how it’s really done lol Catching those fish is an art form and those tarheels make it look easy!

Yea, I am thinking of hiring a guide. To costly to go all that way for a boat ride…
