Cinco de Mayo eve - late report

First trip to the Edisto Banks as captain. Rented an EPIRB and took two buddies (Blackmon and RDW). RDW had fished way more than me and Blackmon had been on two charters in his life with only one shark caught, nothing else. I was a little worried about the luck he’d bring. So, we left St Helena probably around 5am, deciding our definiton of a good day would be 6 dolphin on he way out.

Stopped a just short of the banks and started putting the spread out. Doubled up by the time three lines were out. Two gaffers in the boat. Blackmon had his first real saltfish ever and I had the first dolphin in my own boat. Pretty exciting. Exciting enough that it turned off for a while. Had one strike that cut off almost instantly. Went north along the ledge with not much action for a while. Headed back south, found scattered weeds but not much action. Towards lunch got back into them a bit. Got one on that fought for a while, got it close enough to expect color and could only really pick out the chugger… WAHOO! Everyone focused and we landed my first personal wahoo, check the pic, I’m proud. Also stuck a couple more dolphin, losing one to the gaff right at the boat but she was the smallest of the day by a ways and probably should have slung her in.

The colors for us that day was green and white or green and yellow, all fish taken on top.

Wrapped up the day drifting on the bottom for a few minutes, drifted right down some ledge. Couldn’t keep the vermillion and porgy off of the hooks. One other fish caught, he was tiny and didn’t know what he was so let him back down. Kept a few, let lots go.

Headed back west for a few miles and ran up on the weed line we’d been looking for in about 150’. Saw a group of birds busy about a half mile to the north along the line and hoped for blackfin to round out the slam. Instead found about 100 dolphin that would follow anything you pitched to them, but wouldn’t take anything seriously. Hooked into one for just a second, but came off. At one point lack of com

Just one. Had 2 spare radios, sat weather, sea tow, epirb, 10 other boats within site most of the time and a 2’@8sec weather prediction w/0-10% chance of rain depending on where you looked. Picking days is a must for me, but having tools and plan B and even C’s keep as much of a chance of dealing with anything I need to out there.

Nah, didn’t have anywhere to weigh it. We guessed 40, told everyone 45…you’re probably right on it.
