Due to the high number of gut hooked stripers ive caught recently I decided to try some circle hooks since i here they reduce gut hooks.
I bought some red 3/0 octopus inline circles by gamakatsu, should I do good with these? Is there a different way to fish with circles than regular hooks.
The only thing with the circle hook is that you can not set the hook. Some like them and some don’t.

Are you using live herring? 3/0 is pretty big for that. I was speaking with the Capt of Striper Addiction the other day and he doesn’t go above #2s for live herring.

Yeah I use live herring but when I use a normal hook I use a 3/0, but I dont know these do look big I might have to go get some 2/0.
Thanks for the help though yall.

I was using 2/0 and 3/0 and what he told me is that Murray is so clear that the fish can see a hook that big and it cuts down on your strikes. Also a hook that big impeeds the swimming ability of the herring. I switched last time out and probably got twice as many strikes with the #2.

I can second that. I switched from 1/0 to #2 and it has made a difference. It only makes sense that less hook would help the bait swim better and be less noticable. Circle hooks are even bigger. It may seem strange to downsize so much to you, but just try a size 2. Try half of your lines with 2 and the others with your 3/0 and see what happens.
#2 is the ticket. Don’t be in a hurry to get the rod out of the holder. The fish will hook himself. Remember"CRANK,DON"T YANK". Most fish will be hooked in the corner or top of the mouth, depending on which way he swims off. Use a Rapala knot so the hook is free, and the bait will look more natural.
Growing old is MANDATORY, Growing up is OPTIONAL!
#4’s are even better. Light wire offset eagle claw. Don’t even mess with circle hooks.

I would think a light wire would straighten on a big fish.

Not if you don’t use too much drag.
