hope this isn’t a cross-post… worth a read:
Good stuff.
Sellsfish took me fishing last year, and we caught a few rudderfish. He told me it was one of the most unappreciated fish in the ocean. He was right. It was delicious!
As far as shrimpers go, here’s a good illustration of their bycatch:

A lot of people don’t want to hear it, but shrimping is just a bad deal for a lot of sea life. It would be great of other methods could be invented to mitigate all of that waste.
Good read. Thanks!

There are, but bottom draggers get most of the press and that’s where most of the bycatch comes from.
I don’t know much about how SC works for shrimpers, but I don’t see any fishing inside the inlets here. Is that because there are no shrimp for them or is it against the law? Skimmer trawls are pretty efficient and don’t tear up the bottom.
In the photo above some of that bycatch looks large enough to eat
although it may not be anything people want to eat. Is edible bycatch retained and sold? What about bycatch inedible to humans. Seems like it could be made into pet food, fish meal, crab bait, chum, etc. To just pitch all those dead fish overboard seems like a terrible waste.
Rudderfish is delicious. Made an awesome crudo with one. Hope it doesn’t get popular and expensive
