clams

If I wanted to go clamming what is a good spot? I like to put in at cherry point or maybe stono bridge…

thanks in advance.

More important than a good spot, first you have to find a legal spot.
Look here for the recreational shellfish areas near you.

You can get clams within any shellfish grounds, either public or state grounds.

But you may already know the regulations.
The problem is finding sandy areas. I don’t know of any good spots near Cherry Point, hopefully someone else will chime in.
I have gotten 9 clams from this area at low tide.

It took me 45 minutes to dig them up and the soil was part pluff mud, part sand. I was up do my knees in it struggling to move around, I will never do that again!

I know Bulls Bay is a great place for clams, I just haven’t made it out there yet.

my uncle was a local crabber/clammer for many decades in the stono, I used to help out him out several times a year…

first find out where it’s legal, and by what means because I’m not sure

find a mud bank when the tide is low, we walked the mud banks on the stono and filled many burlap bags full everyday… look for the skeleton key looking holes in the mud, there’s a clam under every one

we used a long tooth hand rake and plucked them right out, not sure if that’s legal for recreational clamming… I think I read somewhere that it isn’t, which surprised me, but I don’t know so ask around or call DNR

I can’t tell you whether or not it is legal but I sure can tell you where to find some great clams…but it’s off of Edisto Island. Launch your boat at the marina, go into the South Edisto inlet and motor across the inlet to the island directly across from the beach houses at the end of the island. When you land, move away from the exposed beach, to the flat area that is mostly sand but with a little mud mixed with it. Dig down and you will find plenty of clams. You don’t need a rake or hoe, just dig with you hands and you will find all the clams you need. Assuming that this is a legal place to harvest, do check on the size limit. Some may be too small to harvest but there are plenty to choose from. Have fun.

Careful with digging with your hands…once heard of a guy who really messed up his hand doing that…stuck his hand down n a broken bottle that was in the mudd…

I can tell you where it’s Not Legal and what the fine is.

“There Hasn’t Been Any Oysters Harvest Open Since 1987 In Cherry Grove”. I had an honest 1/2 dozen in a bucket. For $110.00 I learned a lot. “IF” you put them (illegal shellfish) in your car or boat or pants they can confiscate them. The Shellfish (Clams & Oysters) are controlled by DHEC, I should know.

Look in all the small ditches off of the main channel. This was in SC-206 off of folly river about a mile up from the lighthouse.

go after a storm and look around for them in the marsh, oyster shells, etc. usually when i see a few laying around i can dig up some more in the area. i use an old 4 tined rake and if you can get the feel for (or an ear for) the way the rake scratches over the clam shells you can be pretty productive. i just saw some over in the state gounds (s201) by the folly ramp this weekend but i didnt have my rake with me. good luck
