If you are looking for stirpers at CH, this would be a good place to start. The channel going out before Horseshoe Is. had them stacked up. It looked like one of those fake adds for Lowrance on the screen. Late afternoon until early evening.
Hey Chris…remember I am new to this. I not sure where Parksville is. Is that out washington road (in Augusta) or Fuerrys Ferry? What ramp do you put in at? Also when I get there how far out do I go and How deep do I fish? Also I have been 3 times this summer 1 bite and thats it. So I am not too good at this yet…ha ha. How do I rig a bb Herring for depth and for trolling. Any info you share helps a ton. Not many people fish CH, esp. from Augusta. SO your a great source of info.
Not sure that I am a great source of info. but, I will get you going in a direction. Trolling - basically two types. Lures and umbrella rigs are on type, this is done at around 2.8 mph (using the gas boat motor). BB herring is another, here you are very slow trolling … and I mean slow. It is done with an electric trolling motor and often will have planner boards out on either side of the boat (two per side is the norm) as well as down lines and a free line in the back. Mostly used in spring fall and winter. Speed can be judged by your planner board, you will just see a wake or can be judged by your down lines not being dragged at more than 70 degrees (90 degrees being straight down. Down rigs are carolina rigs with 2 oz weight and 2/0 kahle or circle hook (that will be a debate all by itself). The fish seem to be in the 40 ft range now.
Parksville is up the SC side of the lake. It has a nice ramp and cleaning station. After leaving the ramp, head out to the middle of the lake, as you leave the parksville area you will have horsshoe Is. on your right. I have found fish before (about 1/4 mile) the island. You are taking up a very difficult type of fishing, hope you enjoy being out on the boat.
If you want to go with me, drop a line and we can hook up. Right now I am trolling lures, which covers a lot of ground while looking for fish.
Also check the Clarks Hill Striper Club, and you might also want to join. From what I know they are a nice bunch of guys and some outstanding fisherman!
Good luck … welcome aboard, What are you fishing out of?
