I’d like to bring it up again; the dangers associated with cuts, nicks, scrapes etc. and fish. Capt. E on here knows first hand and many of you may remember how he got infected from a fish prick and went through months and months of treatment and re-hab. I just read on another site about a guy that actually died from just a small cut. I’m going to cut a paste a few lines on here. The best is some advice from a doctor on what is the best item to keep on your boat to clean these scrapes and punctures.
we have many patients a year that have small cuts or scrapes, that literally develop into full blown life threatening sepsis in only a matter of days.
best thing you can do as simple as it seems is to wash your hands often.
and invest in some hibiclens</font id=“red”> (brand name) the active ingredient chlorahexidine gluconate is what we use to clean surgical areas and central venous catheter sites in the intensive care unit.
it can be purchased at any major pharmacy, store a small bottle in in your boat/tackle bag/ etc.
the benefit hibiclens has over alcohol or peroxide is that the active ingredient maintains its antimicrobial action long after it is applied
My Co workers Dad 73 yrs of age was fatally exposed to the vibrio bacteria and was not able to survive as a result due to being cut while cleaning perch caught @ Money Island recently several weeks ago. He was buried friday a week ago…it spread from his hand aggressively and was untreatable…article also posted in Courier Post last Sunday confirms many deaths in Fla connected to this same bacteria
